Romney makes his case - 'Need jobs, lots of jobs' - NewsOK.com
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney launched his fall campaign for the White House in a rousing Republican National Convention finale Thursday night, proclaiming America needs "jobs, lots of jobs" and promising to create 12 million of them in perilous economic times.
"Now is the time to restore the promise of America," Romney said in excerpts released in advance of his prime-time speech to a nation struggling with 8.3 percent unemployment and the slowest economic recovery in decades.
He muted his criticism in the advance excerpts of President Barack Obama, his quarry in a close and unpredictable race for the White House.
"I wish President Obama had succeeded because I want America to succeed," he said. "But his promises gave way to disappointment and division."
"This isn't something we have to accept ," he said, appealing to millions of voters who say they are disappointed in the president yet haven't yet decided to cast their votes for his Republican challenger.
"Now is the moment when we can stand up and say, 'I'm an American. I make my destiny. And we deserve better! My children deserve better! My family deserves better! My country deserves better!"
Romney's remarks came after other speakers filled out a week-long portrait of the GOP nominee as a man of family and faith, savvy and successful in business, savior of the 2002 Winter Olympics, yet careful with a buck. A portion of the convention stage was rebuilt overnight so he would appear surrounded by delegates rather than speaking from a distance, an attempt to soften his image as a sometimes-stiff and distant candidate.
"He shoveled snow and raked leaves for the elderly. He took down tables and swept floors at church dinners," said Grant Bennett, describing Romney's volunteer work as an unpaid lay clergy leader in the Mormon church.
Following him to the podium, Ted and Pat Oparowski tenderly recalled how Romney befriended their 14-year-old son David as he was dying of cancer. "We will be ever grateful to Mitt for his love and concern," she said.
Beyond the heartfelt personal testimonials and political hoopla, the evening marked one of a very few opportunities any presidential challenger is granted to appeal to millions of voters in a single night.
The two-month campaign to come includes other big moments ? principally a series of one-on-one debates with Democrat Obama ? in a race for the White House that has been close for months. In excess of $500 million has been spent on campaign television commercials so far, almost all of it in the battleground states of Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada.
Romney holds a fundraising advantage over Obama, and his high command hopes to expand the electoral map soon if post-convention polls in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and perhaps elsewhere indicate it's worth the investment. In a speech that blended the political and the personal, Romney talked in his excerpts of the importance of the love he felt from his parents and that he and his wife Ann have sought to give their children and grandchildren.
"All the laws and legislation in the world will never heal this world like the loving hearts and arms of mothers and fathers," he said.
As for Obama, he said, "Many Americans have given up on this president, but they haven't ever thought about giving up. Not on themselves, Not on each other. And not on America."
The economy is issue No. 1 in the race for the White House, and Romney presented his credentials as the man better equipped than the president to help create jobs. Speaker after speaker testified to the help their received from Bain Capital, the private equity firm that he created ? and that Democrats argue often took over firms, loaded them down with debt and then walked away with huge fees as they slid into bankruptcy.
"When I was 37, I helped start a small company," he said. "That business we stated with 10 people has now grown into a great success story.
Romney knows the value of dollar, delegates were assured.
"When I told him about Staples, he really got excited at the idea of saving a few cents on paper clips," businessman Tom Stemberg said of the office supply store chain he founded with backing from Bain Capital, the private equity firm the presidential nominee co-founded.
There was no shortage of Obama-bashing, though.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, sharing the stage with his wife, Callista, said Obama was a president in the Jimmy Carter mold. Both "took our nation down a path that in four years weakened America's confidence in itself and our hope for a better future," he said.

Microsoft links Windows 8 apps to Azure
Microsoft is adding mobile connectivity between Windows applications and the Windows Azure cloud platform with the introduction this week of Windows Azure Mobile Services.

The technology will enable users to connect client and mobile applications based on Windows 8 to a scalable cloud back end, said Scott Guthrie, corporate vice president in the Microsoft Server and Tools Business, in a blog post. "It allows you to easily store structured data in the cloud that can span both devices and users, integrate it with user authentication, and send out updates to clients via push notifications." Windows 8 is due to ship on October 26.

Plans call for Windows Azure Mobile Services to soon add support for Windows Phone, Apple iOS, and Google Android devices. Users can get started by signing up for a 90-day free trial of Windows Azure, whereupon they enable their account to support the Mobile Services preview.

"Once you have the mobile services preview enabled, log into the Windows Azure Portal, click the 'New' button, and choose the new 'Mobile Services' icon to create your first mobile back end," Guthrie said. Once the back end is created, users will see a quick-start page with instructions on connecting the mobile service to an existing or new Windows 8 client application. Azure users can as many as 10 mobile services in a free, multitenant hosting environment.

"When you create a Windows Azure Mobile Service, we automatically associate it with a SQL database inside Windows Azure. The Windows Azure Mobile Service backend then provides built-in support for enabling remote apps to securely store and retrieve data from it (using secure REST end-points utilizing a JSON-based ODATA format) -- without you having to write or deploy any custom server code. Built-in management support is provided within the Windows Azure portal for creating new tables, browsing data, setting indexes, and controlling access permissions," Guthrie said.

JK Rowling to build Hogwarts-style tree houses
LONDON (AP) ? J.K. Rowling is building two tree houses fit for a wizard.
Despite some complaints from neighbors, the City of Edinburgh Council said Thursday it has approved the Harry Potter author's application to create the large tree houses in her garden for her children.
The structures, each about 40 feet (12 meters) high, feature tall conical roofs and turreted windows in the style of Hogwarts Castle in the Harry Potter movies.
Artist impressions submitted to the council show that they will be built on wooden stilts and are connected by a rope bridge. Other features included are lanterns above the doors, a spiral staircase, balconies, a trap door, and a steel slide.
Several neighbors had written to object, saying the tree-houses may be visible from the road through a gap in the conifers that shield the development and could affect the area's landscape.
But the council granted Rowling's request, saying the development will not have a negative impact on the conservation area.
Rowling, 47, lives in a 17th-century mansion in an Edinburgh suburb with her husband and three children.

Cricket to offer Muve exclusively on Android plans
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mobile phone carrier Cricket is making its unlimited music service, Muve Music, an exclusive feature of its higher-end phones.
The change is a bid to encourage users of lower-end, basic cellphones to trade up to smartphones, which require more expensive plans. The company will stop offering the service on basic phones to new customers.
Muve Music allows users to download songs from a catalog of millions. The songs cannot be transferred off the phone, and access disappears if a subscriber cancels service. About 600,000 Cricket subscribers now pay an extra $10 a month to get the service.
Starting next month, Muve will be included in all plans for smartphones that use Google's Android operating system. The plans go from $50 a month including 1 gigabyte of data to $70 a month for 5 GB.
Previously, Android phones with unlimited data plans cost $55 a month, or $65 with Muve included. The least expensive non-smartphone plan with Muve cost $55 a month.
As Cricket adds new customers and others leave, the plan could help boost Muve Music's subscriber count.
Cricket, which offers lower-cost, contract-free plans to rival those of the bigger carriers, currently has 5.9 million customers, and 60 percent of them use Android phones.
If those numbers hold steady, subscribers to Muve Music could exceed 3 million in the two years that it generally takes for Cricket's customer base to change over completely. That would make it the largest music subscription plan in the nation.
Both Rhapsody and Spotify, the market leaders in the U.S., currently have about 1 million paying U.S. subscribers each.
The use of Muve does not count against one's data cap. The typical customer downloads about 300 songs and listens to more than 30 hours of music every month, the company said.
Cricket, the brand of Leap Wireless International Inc., saw its subscriber count drop to 5.9 million in the quarter through June, down from 6.2 million in the previous quarter. Leap executives blamed the dip on weak results from national retailers that carry the brand. Leap has its headquarters in San Diego.

Goal of united Syrian opposition still elusive
AZAZ, Syria (AP) ? In the foreign halls of power, the strategy is clear: Syria's opposition should unite to present an alternative to Bashar Assad's rule ? a step France's president says would lead to diplomatic recognition.
As a move toward unity, Syrian exiles from the main opposition Syrian National Council and other groups unveiled a blueprint Tuesday in the German capital of Berlin for transition to a democratic, transparent society free of religious and ethnic favoritism.
But rebels and civilians in the bomb-shattered Syrian town of Azaz near the Turkish border view such talk as hollow. They are deeply skeptical of all exiled leaders and believe what really matters is their fight on the ground to overthrow the regime.
"They have never come up with a united position that will save the people," said Fadi Hajji, 25, who had been camped out along the Syrian border with Turkey with his wife and two infant daughters for five days. "All they are good at is arguing. They don't represent anyone here and they don't help."
There was more bloodshed Tuesday as a car bomb ripped through a Damascus suburb, killing 12 people, according to the state news agency. Activists also said an airstrike in the town of Kfar Nabl killed at least 13 people as fighting raged nationwide.
With no end to the carnage in sight, French President Francois Hollande called on the Syrian opposition Monday to form a provisional government, saying France would recognize and support it.
Hollande's statement, believed to be the first of its kind, was quickly shot down by U.S. officials who said talk of a provisional government was premature given the deep divisions within the opposition movement.
The head of the main Syrian opposition group, the Syrian National Council, criticized the U.S. stand, saying that efforts were under way to forge a united front but that the process takes time ? especially in the midst of a raging civil war.
"It seems to me as if the international community is not prepared to take decisive decisions and blames the Syrian opposition for its own shortcomings," Abdelbaset Sieda told The Associated Press by telephone Tuesday from Switzerland.
"Yes, there are differences within the Syrian opposition, and this is normal in any country. But as long as we are agreed on a common vision, these differences can be overcome," he added. "The international community must make a move before it's too late."
Those comments were echoed in Berlin by opposition exiles who drafted the 122-page transition blueprint during six months of consultations funded by governments of the United States, Germany, Switzerland and private groups in Norway and the Netherlands.
"It is quite easy to say the opposition is fragmented and the opposition has not done enough," said Murhaf Jouejati, a U.S.-based professor and SNC member. "But we really should start facing realities ... to get the international community behind this national uprising against a totalitarian, authoritarian, brutal regime."
Although neither expressed a concrete demand, many in the SNC have been hoping the world community would impose a safe zone along the Turkish border, possibly extending to a no-fly zone over at least some areas, and would more openly supply weapons and ammunition to rebels. The disparate groups are also each hoping for support in any power struggle that might follow a collapse of the Assad regime.
Since the uprising began in March last year, Syria's opposition has been plagued by divisions and infighting. In addition to the SNC, several other opposition groups are known to be making similar plans for a provisional government, including a new alliance headed by veteran opposition figure Haitham Maleh.
The strains within the opposition were also evident on Tuesday when the Paris-based SNC spokeswoman Bassma Kodmani, a founding member of the group, resigned. She said the SNC had veered off course.
"The project has not achieved its goals and the council has not earned the required credibility and did not safeguard the trust placed in it by the Syrian people when it was first created. It steered away from the course that we wanted for it when we created it. "
She said she would continue to work for the opposition, just from outside the council.
"I see more space than inside it."
Sieda said his group has been contacting other opposition figures and the Free Syrian Army rebels to consult over a transitional government, but admits they have not started discussing names yet.
Even if the opposition were to unite, there are serious questions whether the disparate groups have enough popular legitimacy to take control of a revolution and rebuild the nation. The men with guns inside Syria have little use for the political figures or even for Free Syria Army commanders who live in the safety and comfort of Paris and Istanbul.
"The SNC is a naive group of people who consider themselves politicians," said Ahmed al-Ghazali, commander of rebels who control Azaz, the town in northern Syria. "To this day, the SNC hasn't done anything ... Count how many people you see here from the SNC. People here are taking their rights for themselves."
Abu Hassan, a bus driver who fled the nearly deserted town of Anadan in northern Syria because of frequent government shelling and airstrikes, complained that "we hear promises" from exiled leaders "but we're not seeing anything on the ground."
"The only people who do anything are the people inside, the officers and the fighters who are in the front lines. The SNC and the Free Army who are abroad, we've never seen anything from them, not aid, not weapons, not ammunition."
As the war inside Syria appears to be grinding to a stalemate, so too is the political struggle. Most foreign powers want to see unity before giving support but the opposition is unable or unwilling to put aside their differences and unite.
Absent a united opposition, the dilemma facing the United States and its Western allies is uncertainty over who inside Syria might emerge with real power after Assad.
Their fear is that the collapse of the four-decade regime ruled by the Assads ? Bashar succeeded his father Hafez 12 years ago ? could unleash a fierce power struggle in which al-Qaida and other Islamic extremists could gain a foothold. With Syria bordering NATO member Turkey, combustible Lebanon with its powerful Hezbollah militia, unstable Iraq, and a nervous Israel with which it has a territorial dispute over the Golan Heights, that is a daunting prospect.
Repeated efforts to unite the opposition have fallen short.
An opposition conference in Cairo last month broke down in shouting and shoving matches over such key questions as whether to ask for foreign military intervention and what role religion would play in a post-Assad Syria.
Some activists complain that SNC is little more than a front for the Muslim Brotherhood, seeking a comeback after the Islamist movement was largely crushed by Hafez Assad in the 1980s.
News reports of bearded fighters inside Syria demanding an Islamist state and the increasing number of car bombs have led to fears in the West that the new Syria would follow the model of Iran or Taliban-run Afghanistan.
At the Berlin news conference, activists took pains to minimize the Islamist character of the revolt. Amr al-Azm, a professor who lives in the U.S., said fears of Islamist influence were widespread during the Libyan uprising but most voters gave their support to secularist leaders in the July election.
Afra Jalabi, a political scientist who lives in Montreal, said the increase in religious symbolism in Syria was "actually a silent protest against a regime that presented itself through its own propaganda as a secular system when it was a macho military system."

Birthplace of most European and West Asian languages traced to Turkey
Using methods borrowed from epidemiology, researchers have identified Anatolia, a peninsula that is now part of Turkey, as the origin of the major language families of Europe and West Asia.

Borrowing a technique used to reconstruct family trees for viruses, an international research team has come down squarely on one side of the debate: Indo-European languages originated in Anatolia, a southwestern Asian peninsula that is now part of Turkey, between 8,000 and 9,500 years ago, and were carried, at least in part, by the spread of agriculture.
Other researchers maintain that Indo-European languages originated in the steppes north of the Caspian and Black seas 6,000 years ago and were spread by the semi-nomadic Kurgan people.
"These two theories have two different ages and homelands, and by tracing back in time using these methods to study viral outbreaks, we are able to test between the theories," Quentin Atkinson of the University of Auckland in New Zealand said in an audio interview released by the journal Science, in which the new research appears.
Instead of constructing a family tree by comparing the DNA of viruses, Atkinson and colleagues compared what are known as cognates, or words in different languages with the same origin. For instance, the English "mother" and the Spanish "madre" are cognates. [Original Language Sounded Like Yoda]
The researchers included about 20 extinct languages in their sample of 100 Indo-European languages; some of these extinct languages, such as Hittite, were spoken more than 3,000 years ago. These ancient languages helped the team look further back in time.
They looked to historical events, such as the breakup of the Roman Empire's language Latin into the Romance languages, to establish a time scale for the evolution of the Indo-European languages.?
They then used a statistical method to focus in on the family trees that best explained their data. The result strongly favors the Anatolian hypothesis, Atkinson said.
The spread of agriculture, either as new generations of farmers sought out new land or through the conversion of hunter-gatherers, was a mechanism that would explain the expansive spread of the languages in this family, according to the researchers, but they added that agriculture was probably not the sole driver of language spread. ?
The research is detailed in Friday's (Aug. 24) issue of the journal Science.

Cyber-attacks have become increasingly common in recent years. Capable of shutting down nuclear centrifuges, air defense systems, and electrical grids, cyber-attacks pose a serious threat to national security. As a result, some have suggested that cyber-attacks should be treated as acts of war. Yet the attacks look little like the armed attacks that the law of war has traditionally regulated. This Article examines how existing law may be applied ? and adapted and amended ? to meet the distinctive challenge posed by cyber-attacks. It begins by clarifying what cyber-attacks are and how they already are regulated by existing bodies of law, including the law of war, international treaties, and domestic criminal law. This review makes clear that existing law effectively addresses only a small fraction of potential cyber-attacks. The law of war, for example, provides a useful framework for only the very small number of cyber-attacks that amount to an armed attack or that take place in the context of an ongoing armed conflict. This Article concludes that a new, comprehensive legal framework at both the domestic and international levels is needed to more effectively address cyber-attacks. The United States could strengthen its domestic law by giving domestic criminal laws addressing cyber-attacks extra-territorial effect and by adopting limited, internationally permissible countermeasures to combat cyber-attacks that do not rise to the level of armed attacks or that do not take place during an ongoing armed conflict. Yet the challenge cannot be met by domestic reforms alone. International cooperation will be essential to a truly effective legal response. New international efforts to regulate cyber-attacks must begin with agreement on the problem ? which means agreement on the definition of cyber-attack, cyber-crime, and cyber-warfare. This would form the foundation for greater international cooperation on information sharing, evidence collection, and criminal prosecution of those involved in cyber-attacks ? in short, for a new international law of cyber-attack.

That was the message from the Federation of Lesotho Rugby (FLR), during yesterday?s official launch of the rugby association in Lesotho.
The federation was recently recognised as an affiliate member of the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission (LSRC).
Speaking at the launch held at Lesotho High School grounds, the federation?s vice-president, Fetang Selialia, told the Sunday Express that the turn-out from both youngsters and those who have already been involved in the sport was impressive.
?I never expected people to come in such big numbers, it really shows that we started on a high note and the future is bright for rugby hopefuls,? he said.
?The establishment of the Maseru Kings, the local rugby team that has been competing in the Eastern Free State leagues, has led the way for rugby fanatics in this country and we want to see the sport growing even bigger in the coming months,? Selialia said.
He said more focus will be on developing youngsters under the age of 18, after introducing the youth development programme on the same day.
Selialia added: ?At the moment facilities remain a challenge but the Minister of Sports, Ntate Thesele Maseribane, is keen to help us grow the sport. He had a meeting with us and has promised to help put the needed structures in place.?
Teams from South Africa also graced the celebrations, while Selialia said the members of the Botswana rugby association who attended the event came to give a helping hand to their Lesotho counterparts.
He applauded the support from the corporate sector and noted that telecommunication giant, Econet-Telecom-Lesotho and Castle Lager have played a big part in helping improve rugby.

If I Hadn't Made These 3 Mistakes When I Started My Online ...
When I first started my online business, I was clueless Silly me?
I had 25 years of business management and marketing under my belt and thought this was gonna be a walk in the park. I mean, I've run businesses with 50+ employees. Surely conquering the world behind a computer screen in my jammies would be a piece of cake, right? Wrong!
I think that's what most of us think when we start an internet business. How hard can it be, right? After all, we've seen so much about average people finding overnight internet success on autopilot, while they slept. If they can do it, so can we.
I'm here to tell you that's a bunch of whooie.
It doesn't work that way. Nobody who's green to building an online business just jumps right in and starts making money immediately. It's not realistic. You have to learn how it's done. The process, the mechanics and the marketing. The offline world of business does not prepare you for the online world. You have to educate yourself, learn then implement, rinse and repeat. The one thing that offline and online have in common is that overnight success usually takes a while.
Mistake #1 - Not taking list building serious enough
Building your email list is the #1 most important thing you must do each and every day in your business if you want to make money. Period. Nothing else you do will matter much if you don't have a targeted responsive list of prospects to market to over and over again. Your list is the bread and butter of your online business. I didn't quite get that. I was told you can make big profits with a small list. The fact of the matter is you can make a little money, but not much. The bigger and more targeted your list the more money you will make. Plain and simple. You should be adding people to your list each and every day. If not, you might want to rethink your strategies.
Mistake #2 - Trying to figure WordPress out on your own
Can it be done? Absolutely. But should you waste the time and energy involved in learning it on your own? Probably not. WordPress is now the industry standard for your blog or website because it's so search engine friendly and there's just nothing you can't do with WordPress. It's capability and functionality is 2nd to none. Once you know your way around WordPress, it's very easy to use, but there is a bit of a learning curve. Don't waste time figuring it out on your own. Take a course and get the basics down quickly so you can get your business moving forward faster. This is the key to getting your site up and running, your opt in pages, sales pages, product pages and blog going in much less time. Let's face it, the sooner you have those things under your belt, the sooner you will build your list and start making an income.
Mistake #3 - Planning and setting time limits
In the first couple of years, I spent way too much time working on my business. Often from 8:00 a.m. well up into the night, then I would get up and do it again. I was determined to do whatever it took to make my business work. The problem with that strategy is, if you have no time limits, no deadlines, if you allow your tasks and projects to take as much time as it takes, it takes as much time as you give it. In other words, if you have no boundaries on your time, you allow yourself to be distracted, to fiddle around more than you should and to go chasing shiny objects down rabbit holes (stop it Alice!). It wasn't until I started to strictly plan and schedule my day with a start time and an ending time that I was really able to focus and get things done in a timely manner. My family was much happier too. I make way more money in 30 hours a week than I ever did in 70.
