Olympics 2012: Mexico outfits at Opening Ceremony #FAIL ...

Olympics 2012: Mexico outfits at Opening Ceremony #FAIL???

People tend to be patriotic during the Olympics.

The outfits the Mexican national team wore during the Opening Ceremony were widely criticized.

They were very colorful and used some of the traditional patterns worn by the indigenous of Mexico. But they were designed in bright neon pink, green and orange. They took traditional designs and symbols and made them modern.

They made the worst dressed lists of many and they were trashed on Twitter.

"The 2012 award for @Olympics costumes that looked like someone vomited pure neon all over you goes to?Mexico"
- @dongstoevky

"Que trajes mas feos uso Mexico en el Opening Ceremony de los Olympics, parecian pi?atas lmao!!"

"The most ugly suits used by Mexico in the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics, they look like pi?atas, lmao!!"
-@Ana_AKA

From Facebook:

"Hubiera sido mejor usar los originales trajes hechos de manos indigenas y no de disenadores que ridiculizaron nuestro folklore."

"It would have been better to use the original suits made by indigenous hands and not by designers that ridicule our folklore."
- Norai Pedraza

Personally,? my first impression was that the outfits were fun. I don't think they made fun of Mexican culture but they tried to celebrate it. They do border on tacky but they got the team noticed.

They certainly weren't worse than Germany's pink and blue jackets or the U.K. team's golden collars that reminded me of the FTD flower symbol.

Anyway, it's not about fashion but sports.

Stay tuned as I will blog about the best and worst of Latino and Latin American sports during the 2012 Olympics.

Scranton agrees to pay workers full wages

By Patrick Rizzo, NBC News

The financially-strapped city of Scranton, Pa., has settled with unions representing?its police, firefighters and public works unions in a deal over the mayor's plan to slash?workers' pay to minimum wage.

The Scranton Times reported Monday that under the agreement, Mayor Chris Doherty will pay workers in full by Aug. 17 all the wages they are supposed to get by contract, plus 6 percent interest. In return, the unions have agreed to drop a lawsuit against the mayor that?accused him of civil contempt for defying a judge's order and cutting wages for the city's 398 employees?to $7.25 a hour.

Scranton is among a number of cities struggling to pay their bills amid rising labor costs. Earlier this month, Stockton, Calif., became the largest city in U.S. history to file for bankruptcy protection from creditors.

Scranton's mayor and the city council have been locked in a dispute over how to raise money in a city that has steadily lost population over the past 50 years and?has been hit hard by the real estate slump and the Great Recession that followed. Doherty has argued that the city needs to increase?taxes, but council members want to find other ways to raise money. Doherty is a Democrat as are all the members of the city council.

Role of a Consultant: A peek into Business Consulting in IT firms

What is business consulting?

Business consulting involves working with clients in solving their critical business problems, helping them make better business decisions.

In business consulting, a consultant works hand-in-hand with the client in coming up with a good picture of how the current business processes are, what are the future state requirements and what steps are needed to do the gap analysis between current and future state and provide the best alternatives to close that gap.

Business consulting in IT firms

All the big IT firms have business consulting groups which provide technology enabled business transformation across various verticals such as financial services, healthcare, telecom and consumer goods etc. These IT firms also have horizontal practices which specialize in cross-industry capabilities such as analytics, assurance services, and strategic services.

Asia?s leading IT firm and India?s #1 IT firm TCS has Global Consulting Practice GCP; Infosys has Infosys Consulting. Earlier Infosys Consulting was a subsidiary of Infosys, which later merged with Infosys Technologies and they became a single entity Infosys. On the same lines, HCL Technologies has ETS group which stands for Enterprise Transformation Services. Similarly, all the major IT firms have their business consulting groups.

Role of a business consultant

To understand business consulting, it is imperative to understand the role of a business consultant.

Put in simple words, a consultant?s role is to identify, analyze and solve client?s problems. Consultants are expected to work in a dynamic environment juggling with critical business problems. They bring their knowledge, skill set and their domain competence developed over the years to help solve client?s problems.

When on a project, a consultant may work as a business analyst, prepare various documents such as requirements documents, and work hand in hand with business users at client locations. Also, the consultant may work in assurance and ensure with his/ her domain skills that the system is functionally appropriate and meets the desired business requirements of the client.

When a consultant is not working on a project/ assignment, he/she is involved in working for the consulting practice and is expected to work with senior management in devising response to client?s proposals, develop collaterals, and share his knowledge with the team and work on various business offerings with senior management.

Working on RFPs

While working for the consulting practice, consultants work with various groups within the firm along with the sales and presales team and help them come up with response for proposals.

So the role of consultants, while working on RFPs, is to estimate how much manpower would be needed, the scope and timelines of the project and they work on RFPs to address specific areas related to their work.

Domain Consulting

This involves using one?s domain in helping the client. A consultant who has worked in retail industry for more than a decade would be a perfect fit for providing domain consulting about business processes in retail industry and help a client who is in retail sector to solve client?s business problems. Similarly, a consultant who has substantial experience in banking and financial services may help a bank in transforming its business processes.

Business Analysis

This involves creating business requirements documents, working hand in hand with the client/users to understand how the systems should be changed to minimize the impact on client?s users and adapt to the new business requirements.

Whitepapers/ research papers

Whitepapers are documents which are designed to showcase the capabilities of a company. They act as marketing tools and these papers help build a strong case for the IT firm about how they might approach various business situations. These papers help in getting leads for sales teams and also create awareness among potential customers about various business problems.

Case Studies

Typically, consultants have to write case studies after coming back from projects or assignments.

These case studies have multi-fold benefits. One the one hand, these case studies are helpful for internal knowledge sharing within the firm; on the other hand, these cases showcase the capability that an IT firm has and these cases are used in future to pitch for clients in similar line of business. This capability helps in getting new business from existing clients and also in pitching to new clients.

Common thread among consulting groups of various IT firms

The common thread running among the consulting practices of these firms is that:

-? All of them focus on providing business process and IT transformation

-? Their goal is to provide practical solutions to their clients using the expert pool that these firms have.

-? Their focus is on reducing the IT spends of their clients

-? While reducing the IT spend, the focus is also on achieving operational efficiency for the clients

Differentiating factors among business consulting in various IT firms

1) Firms which have been in business for long have huge knowledge base, so firms which have huge geographic presence, who have large number of projects have built huge learning curve over the years and so they also have cross utilization of the skills and are better placed in helping the clients compared to those firms which are smaller in size.

An example would be TCS which has many projects and is front runner in IT and have expert pool build over the years

2) Smaller players are better placed serving specific segments. For example, Polaris has focus on banking and financial services, as BFS vertical is the front runner in their revenue generation. So it may be better able to cater to clients who belong to this segment.

Similarly, HCL technologies may have an edge in SAP based consulting since they acquired HCL AXON a few years ago and thus bought in SAP competence in an inorganic way.

3) So, different IT firms may target different verticals based on their expertise in particular areas.

Vos the boss in women's Olympics road race

Dutch cycling sensation Marianna Vos finally added Olympic road race gold to her impressive collection of titles after dominating Britain's Lizzie Armitstead in a two-up sprint on Saturday.

Armitstead finished second at over a bike length behind to take the silver with Olga Zabelinskaya of Russia winning the bronze after 140 km of road racing.

Vos, the Olympic champion in the track points in Beijing, came into the race having won five stages of the women's Giro d'Italia as well as the event's overall title.

And she proved that form had not deserted her with a powerful sprint inside the final 200 metres that Armitstead simply could not match.

Defending Olympic champion Nicole Cooke of Britain finished with the main chasing peloton less than 30sec behind the leading trio, who came into the capital on their own to contest the medals.

With the pressure on Britain to claim a medal after the men's road race whitewash on Saturday, the British women made sure there would be no repeat with both Emma Pooley and Armitstead among the main protagonists.

After a series of attacks and counter attacks by climbing specialist Pooley on the Box Hill circuit, Armitstead did well to follow Vos when the Dutchwoman counter-attacked Zabelinskaya with 45 km to go.

American Shelley Olds joined the trio and together the four leaders soon went on to build a lead of 30sec on the peloton over the next 15 km.

Germany, Italy and Sweden were among the big teams not represented in the attack and were left in a desperate chase that was made even more difficult when the rain that had marred the start of the race came on again.

The leaders' bid to stay away suffered a minor blow when Olds dropped out after appearing to suffer a puncture. Almost simultaneously, Swede Emma Johansson suffered the same setback in the chasing peloton.

Vos, Armitstead and Zabelinskaya were not to be outdone, however.

Despite the Americans and Italians moving to the front of the chasing bunch in a bid to help close the gap, the leaders' continued collaboration gave them a lead bordering on 45secs with 18 km remaining.

In the end, it proved enough to secure them the medals.

Chinese great Wang hands out lifting masterclass

Chinese weighlifting great Wang Mingjuan extended her incredible 10-year unbeaten record by totally dominating the field to win her maiden Olympic gold in the -48kg class on Saturday.

Wang's performance lifted spirits for a sport that was earlier sullied by a fresh doping offence, with the IOC kicking Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku out of the Games after testing positive for a banned steroid.

Wang's gold medal ends one of the longest-running anomalies in women's weightlifting.

Although the 26-year-old has dominated her scandal-tainted sport for a decade, she was mysteriously omitted from China's 2004 and 2008 Olympic teams, meaning she had not been able to challenge for the ultimate prize.

During that time Wang -- who this year was picked ahead of reigning world champion and compatriot Tian Yuan -- won four world championships (2002, 2003, 2005, 2009) and the Asian Games in 2010.

Wang was diplomatic when asked about her absences from the two previous Olympics in Beijing and Athens.

"It's 70 percent hard work and 30 percent luck. I think athletes should believe in the decision-making of our leaders," she said.

Wang heaped the pressure on herself with a rushed first snatch at 88kg that saw the barbells come crashing to the ground to gasps from fans packed into the sell-out ExCel arena.

But she nailed her second effort with almost military precision.

As the only lifter left in the competition, Wang came back out to produce another fantastic snatch at 91kg, just under twice her own body weight, to give her a 4kg headstart on closest rival Hiromi Miyake of Japan.

Knees, wrists and knuckles bandaged, hair scraped roughly back in a ponytail, and sporting a white t-shirt under her red and yellow outfit, Wang then handed out a masterclass in how to clean and jerk.

Tossing the barbell up with apparent ease, Wang only entered competition with Miyake and eventual bronze medallist Ryand Chun Hwa of North Korea still lifting.

Smiling, she registered a best of 114kg to give her a combined total of 205kg.

"I wasn't thinking about being caught," said Wang. "I was just so focused on my own game, I put my heart into every lift and listened to my coach's instructions to the letter."

Miyake, who has recently moved down from the -53kg class and is the daughter of Mexico 1968 bronze medallist Yoshiyuki Miyake, claimed silver with a total of 197kg (87, 110).

"I am very very happy," said Miyake. "For years I have thought whether I could win an Olympic medal and I have done it.

"It is my third Olympics and the other times I haven't been able to do it."

There was an early shock in the snatch when reigning world silver medallist Panida Khamsri of Thailand failed to register a mark.

The former junior world champion buckled three times at 81kg, seemingly suffering an elbow injury in her second effort.

Khamsri's 17-year-old teammate Thai Sirivimon Pramongkhol almost claimed a surprise bronze, but was pipped for bronze by 1kg by North Korean Ryang Chun Hwa, who lifted 192kg (80, 112).

Wang's podium topping was the perfect start in the weighlifting for China, which topped the medal table on home soil in Beijing in 2008, claiming eight of the 15 golds on offer and one silver in an awesome display of lifting across the board.

I specialize in helping people lose fat, maintain healthy body weights, and improve their lives through continuous improvements in general health and well-being! I also know a thing or two about building some muscle, too! I love to watch and play and basketball, love football (go Packers!), swim and hit the beach in the summer, weight-train 5 days a week plus some high intensity cardio on the side, and write, produce and record my own music. My personal mission to achieve and maintain a body fat % around 8% for the rest of my life and get that lean, muscular, Hollywood-leading-man type physique (think Dwayne ?The Rock? Johnson, Brad Pitt, Taylor Lautner, Cam Gigandet, etc.). I have no desires to be an Olympic Powerlifter and a Pro Bodybuilder. This life, to me, is about looking great, feeling even better, and learning new things every day, not about achieving unnatural and unrealistic muscle proportions. I originally started weigh-training heavily in March of 2009 at 5?10?, about 170 lbs, and with a body fat % up over 18%. I was ?skinnyfat? (fat and skinny at the same time). WATCH: Is Real Estate Still A Good Investment? From Maria Bartiromo

When Maria Bartiromo, financial expert and anchor of CNBC's "Closing Bell" met with me on Mondays With Marlo, she answered a question that many of us have been wondering - is real estate still a good investment?

If you'd like more financial knowledge and advice on how to make your money grow, check out Maria's advice:

  • Scams

To avoid getting ripped-off, follow this one simple rule: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Don't expect overnight riches; invest for the long-term.

  • Money Buckets

There are three places you should put your money: a savings account for emergencies, a 401(k), for retirement, and a "mad money" bucket, for treats.

  • Protect Your Money

Interest rates on saving accounts are hardly keeping pace with inflation these days. A good alternative is to invest your money in dividend-paying stocks. Some deliver returns of between 4% and 7%, including dividend-paying ETFs.

  • Jobs Of The Future

Nothing is growing as fast as data, so any job in technology is a job of the future. As we're all living longer and struggling with problems of obesity, and such, health care is another top field for jobs.

  • Credit Cards

We all know how easy it is to fall into a debt trap with credit cards. Only use a credit card if you can pay more than the minimum each month. Ideally, you'd pay off the balance each billing cycle. American Express, for example, requires you to pay it all back in one shot.

  • Take Risks

Think outside the box; you never know where it'll lead. It could be the biggest mistake of your life, or a great career move. If it doesn't work, you can always brush yourself off and start over again.

  • Selling Your Home

Put your house on the market and see what kind of numbers you get. Don't try to time the market. Be realistic; it's not the worst part of the crisis, but we probably have at least two more years for the housing sector to recover.

  • Picking Investments

Don't get distracted by hype. Instead, look at company fundamentals: revenue growth, earnings growth, the management team, insider ownership, and the company's product. Ask yourself: will this product be in demand in the coming years?

  • Retirement

We're living longer, so we need to keep our minds going past retirement age. Stay active and keep working!

  • When To Start A 401(k)

Start a 401(k) in your 20s. It'll have more time grow, and you'll have a nice nest egg at retirement. If your company doesn't do matching, open an IRA on your own through any brokerage service.

Eating Disorders, Self-Image And Self-Esteem Educational Video PSA

Eating Disorders and Self-Image Video PSA. Courtesy of the National Eating Disorder Information Centre; The National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC) is a Canadian, non-profit organization, established in 1985 to provide information and resources on eating disorders and weight preoccupation. Our goal is to promote healthy lifestyles that allow people to be fully engaged in their lives. If you, or someone you know, is struggling with an eating disorder or is preoccupied with weight and dieting, please read our Give & Get Help section for valuable information and resources. There are many different kinds of food and weight preoccupations, including eating disorders. This section aims at de-mystifying issues relating to dieting, food, weight concerns, shape concerns, self-esteem and body image. To do so, we will be looking at those influences that most contribute to how we feel about our selves and our bodies, and that ultimately can help us make healthier choices for more enjoyable lives. Body image is the mental picture you have of your body ? what it looks like, what you believe about it, and how you feel about your body. Self-esteem is the ?real? opinion you have of yourself. how you value and respect yourself as a person. Your self-esteem has a direct effect on how you take care of yourself, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Self-esteem and body image also exert influences on each other ? it is hard to feel good about yourself if you hate your body ?

HERE! The Link: WeightLossFastSystem.com 7. . Your Spiritual and Mental Health. If you have other reasons for being overweight?past hurts that you\?ve used food to deal with, depression or other problems, it\?s hard to lose weight. For many of us, food is a comfort and something we\?ve relied on all of our lives to help us deal with emotional problems. If that\?s the case for you, pinpointing those behaviors and what drives them is important for becoming aware of what you\?re doing and why. A counselor can help you with this or take some time to read about emotional eating. Be willing to learn why you make the choices you make and to confront them. 8. . Your Goals. If you\?ve set impossible goals, you are guaranteed to fail. Weight loss becomes hard to achieve if you feel like a constant failure?who wants to feel like that? If that\?s how your weight loss experience is, it\?s no wonder you keep quitting. The key is to set reasonable goals. So what is reasonable? That\?s going to be different for each person depending on your genetics, eating habits, exercise, and metabolism to name a few. You\?re better off setting a long-term goal (whether it\?s to lose weight or compete in a race) and then focusing your attention on daily or weekly goals. Your weekly goal might be to get in 3 cardio workouts, minimum. Pick things you KNOW you\?ll achieve so you\?re always successful. It can be as small as you like, as long as it\?s reachable. 9. . Your Flexibility. You hear a lot ?

Ancient Poop Gives Clues to Modern Diabetes Epidemic

The ancient Native Americans of the desert Southwest subsisted on a fiber-filled diet of prickly pear, yucca and flour ground from plant seeds, finds a new analysis of fossilized feces that may explain why modern Native Americans are so susceptible to Type II diabetes.

Thousands of years of incredibly fibrous foods, 20 to 30 times more fibrous than today's typical diet, with low impact on the blood sugar likely left this group vulnerable to the illness when richer Anglo foods made their way to North America, said study researcher Karl Reinhard, a professor of forensic sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.?

"When we look at Native American dietary change within the 20th century, the more ancient traditions disappeared." Reinhard told LiveScience. "They were introduced to a whole new spectrum of foods like fry-bread, which has got a super-high glycemic index."

The glycemic index of a food is a measure of how fast its energy is absorbed into the bloodstream. It's measured on a scale of 1 to 100, with 1 being the slowest absorbing with the least effect on blood sugar. The native people who lived in the deserts of Arizona would have likely eaten traditional stews with glycemic indexes around 23, Reinhard found. Foods scoring lower than 55 are considered "low-GI" foods. [7 Foods Your Heart Will Hate]

Modern food and modern disease

Members of Southwest Native American tribes are more susceptible than Caucasians to Type II diabetes, which happens when the body either doesn't produce enough insulin to break down sugar from food, or when the body's cells fail to recognize the insulin it does produce.

Researchers have long hypothesized that a "thrifty gene" (or, more likely, genes) acquired through feast and famine makes Native American populations more prone to this chronic disease. The idea is that people who were able to rapidly adapt to both lean times and times of plenty would have done better in ancient times. Today, the modern diet has rendered famine rare in the developed world, but the body continues to respond to times of plenty as if starvation is around the corner. Diabetes and obesity can result.?

Reinhard and his colleagues now suggest that feast and famine may not be necessary for the "thrifty gene" hypothesis to make sense. Basically, Reinhard said, an extremely low-calorie, high-fiber diet made the ancient Native American gut a paragon of efficiency. With the arrival of whites, the diet changed faster than physiology could keep up with it. In other words, the digestive system didn't evolve for abundant, high-GI foods.?

High-fiber diet

To find solid evidence of what ancient Southwestern tribes actually ate, Reinhard turned to what he called "the most intimate residues from archaeological sites" ? fossilized poop. Known as coprolites, these fossils contain a record of their creator's most recent meals.

The researchers analyzed 25 coprolites from Antelope Cave in northwestern Arizona, a dwelling that was seasonally occupied for thousands of years. These particular coprolites (20 of which turned out to be human) date back to at least A.D. 1150 and earlier. The dates make the cave a perfect time to look at the transition from a total hunter-gatherer lifestyle to one supplemented by some agriculture, Reinhard said.

"It bridges two different dietary traditions, one which has been around for several thousands of years with one that was relatively newly introduced at the time the cave was occupied," he said.

The analysis revealed that these ancient people chowed down on flour made from maize and wild sunflower and other seeds, as well as on fibrous succulent plants such as yucca and prickly pear. This diet was higher fiber than anything modern people eat. The feces were three-quarters fiber by volume, Reinhard said, and these Native Americans were probably eating between 200 and 400 grams of the indigestible stuff per day. For comparison, the Institute of Medicine recommends 25 grams of fiber a day for the modern woman, and 38 grams for men. The average adult manages only about 15 grams. [8 Reasons Our Waistlines Are Expanding]

Modern agriculture has favored plants with less fiber, Reinhard said, so even the ancient tribes' maize would have been more fibrous than the corn we eat today.

"When I was a young researcher I tried to replicate this diet, and it was impossible," Reinhard said. "I was essentially eating all day to try to get this fiber."

Evolving diets

In addition, Reinhard and his colleagues reported in the August issue of the journal Current Anthropology, the Southwest Native American diet had a very low glycemic index. Prickly pear pads, a common staple, rate only a 7 on the 100-point GI scale. The highest-GI food these tribes would have had was maize, the researchers found, which would fall at about 57 on the scale ? just two points shy of qualifying as a "low-GI" food today. (Modern sweet corn on the cob has a GI of 60; processed foods like white rice and bagels are in the 90-95 range.)

In addition, prickly pear has a known blood-sugar-lowering effect, Reinhard said. Agave and yucca plants would have also had minimal effect on the blood sugar while providing yet more fiber. Rabbit, including bone fragments, was also found in the fecal fossils.

"The change we have undergone over generations has been toward less appreciation of really resistant foods and more toward what is called a 'Pablum' diet," Reinhard said. "It's kind of like going from chewing on pumpkin seeds to chewing on oatmeal."

The diet seen in the desert Southwest up to just 1,000 years ago is likely similar to what people ate the whole world over up until about 15,000 years ago, Reinhard said. And then humans invented agriculture, cultivating wheat, millet, rice and other grains.

"These plants, as they were cultivated, replaced the really, really ancient foods that everybody ate thousands and thousands of years ago with calorie-dense foods, or grains that could be turned into calorie-dense foods like grains, rice cakes, and, of course, alcoholic beverages," Reinhard said.

An aspect which is allied with the latter are the visualisation of uniform patterns. Uniforms are fundamental to a business just like advertisements; however, unlike advertisements, they can be worked-out under a low-cost financial plan. In the process of design creation, it should be understood that there are particular aspects which need a more in depth concentration like the colour and overall pattern or structure. Work uniforms should not be used for granted because they are not mere clothing pieces which one wears to work; it is a depiction of the business where the employee works.

The following concepts can aid in appreciating the key aspects better.

Logo- this often contains the company name or the symbol which embodies its vision as well as mission; hence, it represents the company as a whole. However, the location and the size are often being taken for granted; it?s important to keep in mind that before printing or embroidering a logo, a tactic ought to be practiced since a uniform can also be a form of advertising.

Structure/ Design- customized apparel are known to allow companies to be creative in the design of the different work uniforms. In line with this, it should be understood that the overall structure of the clothing should not be compromised as a result of excessive imagination. Every piece should still be able to exemplify the company?s general identity.

The colour- is another main feature that should never be taken for granted due to the fact that it covers the majority of the office wear or uniform being planned. It also stands-out from the rest of the parts; hence, making it more noteworthy to people who see it.

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? President John Atta Mills' election victory secured Ghana's reputation as one of the most mature democracies in West Africa, a position further solidified Tuesday when the vice president took over only hours after the 68-year-old president died five months before finishing his first term.

John Mahama's swift inauguration underscored Ghana's stability in a part of the world where the deaths of other leaders have sparked coups.

"We are deeply distraught, devastated as a country," Mahama said after his swearing-in ceremony, where he raised the golden staff of office above his head.

Ghanaian state-run television stations GTV and TV3 broke into their regular programming to announce the president's death Tuesday afternoon. Government officials did not release the cause of his death, which came three days after his 68th birthday.

Rumors had swirled about Atta Mills' health in recent months after he made several trips to the United States, and opposition newspapers had reported he was not well enough to run for a second term.

Some radio stations even announced that he was dead during one of his recent trips to the States. When Atta Mills returned to Ghana, he jogged at the airport and blasted those who had falsely reported his death.

On the streets of Cape Coast, kilometers (80 miles) from Accra, people held radios to their ears on the street, listening to the funeral hymns playing on FM stations and waiting for more information about the president's unexpected death.

"His speeches were full of a spirit of love and peace," said Efua Mensima, 45. "He was soft-spoken. I wept when I heard of his death."

In a predominantly Ghanaian section of Ivory Coast's commercial capital, a group of 10 men tried to organize a bus to take them to Ghana for the president's funeral.

"The Ghanaian people were happy with this president and his program for the development of the country," said Nour Ousmane Aladji, 27, a taxi driver who moved to Abidjan in 2000.

Chris Fomunyoh, the senior director for Africa for the Washington-based National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, said that Ghana's democracy could weather the death of a president.

In other nations in West Africa, the death of a ruler usually spells a coup, as it did in neighboring Guinea following the 2008 death of longtime dictator Lansana Conte, and Togo, where the military seized power after the president's death in 2005 in order to install the leader's son.

"Ghanaian democracy has been tested and its institutions function well," said Fomunyoh. "There's no reason to think that Ghana and its democracy will not handle this event properly."

Atta Mills was elected in a 2008 runoff vote that was the closest in the country's history ? and his third presidential bid.

"People are complaining. They're saying that their standard of living has deteriorated these past eight years," he told The Associated Press at the time. "So if Ghana is a model of growth, it's not translating into something people can feel."

He went on to serve as president as Ghana began grappling with how to deal with its newfound oil wealth from offshore fields discovered in the last five years. The country of about 25 million saw a growth rate of more than 14 percent last year, though some analysts say the handling of his time in office was less than stellar.

The government got involved in a dispute with Kosmos Energy, the owner of the country's Jubilee oil field, a spat that resulted in a delay in the proceeds from the country's nascent oil trade, said Peter Pham, director of the Africa Center at the Atlantic Council.

Atta Mills also was one of the only leaders in West Africa who didn't back plans for an intervention force during last year's near-civil war in Ivory Coast. Because of its shared border, Ghana became the main smuggling route for Ivorian cocoa.

The late president spent much of his career teaching at the University of Ghana. He earned a doctorate from London's School of Oriental and African Studies before becoming a Fulbright scholar at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Atta Mills also served as vice president under Jerry Rawlings, a coup leader who was later elected president by popular vote and surprised the world by stepping down after the 2000 vote.

Richard Downie, the deputy director of the Africa program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said that Atta Mills may be remembered more for what his election in 2008 symbolized than for what he did as president.

He defeated the ruling party by the slimmest of margins, marking two successful handovers of power in Ghana, a benchmark used by political scientists to measure a mature democracy.

"It showed just how robust Ghana's democracy was, and it proved here in the U.S. what a success Ghana had become in terms of its political maturity," he said.

Baby's (Mine) 1st Birthday Pictures | Babys First Year Blog

Top2 24 of The Most Adorable 1st Birthday Party Pics (Really)So you know that beach party I was raving about? All of those amazing ideas I had curated and was dead set on executing?

    Yea.

    Didn?t happen.

What did happen was a?most lovely, sweet affair, in our backyard with?most of our nearest and dearest. I?l be the first of any to proclaim the?many virtues of all that is DIY.?Especially?when it comes to anything baby, toddler, house and home related. And obviously food/drink recipes. (Hello Pinterest,?my sexy BFF).

As we?momma?s know, life in the land of baby and toddler takes on a carnivalesque hue at times. Wherein we just don?t have the time to put?Martha Stewart to shame. Which is fine, because our babies?

    They. Don?t. Care.

You could stick a candle in a?McCain cake, let them roll around naked and have those who love and dote upon them the?most show up. That right there is all they need and/or know about a party in their honour being awesome. Oh, and the presents. But that bit doesn?t come until later.

I guess what I?m trying to say, is all of these grand birthday parties are really for us. The adults. And the expectation of presents, well ? that all up to us to. These little humans after all, are essentially?moulded by us. So, what?may be cute when they are younger? (Ripping open a mountain of pressies). Will be far less so when they start to demand or expect it, often skulking when they don?t get it. We?ve all heard the term, ??I?ve created a?monster?.

    ?Nuff said.

It should also be?mentioned that technically, Abby doesn?t turn 1 until this Thursday ? we had her grand hoopla of a party earlier to accommodate guest RSVP?s. So you?can expect to be hit with another round of epic cuteness come the actual day of her birth. Until then though,?may your ovaries (or other baby-loving parts) be tickled by these?

      Non-Stop Good Times Over Here

She has a slight asphyxiation with opening her mouth wide, leaving it gaping, with tounge lolling at times. She's been doing it constantly. While dancing, while crawling, when she wakes up and boogies in her crib...watching herself in her closet mirrors - quite entertained by the whole show. Put on by herself. That's my girl.

In case I wasn't clear enough before. It would appear as though this little girl was having herself a most excellent time.

      Photo-Bomber

Otherwise known as the Daddy. Every chance he'll get. This cute shot is of our little girl with her daycare provider whom we are very lucky to have. She is such a loving, quality friend to our babies. As are her children and her hubby. It was super cool to hang with them socially.

      Oh, You Pretty (Little) Thing(s)

David Bowie, I know you wrote that song for my girl. (Even though I really know it's all about the influences of occultist [Crowly], and Nietzsche [that famous philosopher] on us humans [and our obsolescence] in favour of the notion that aliens and teenagers should [and will] rule the world. Now ya know.)

      From a Distance

Watching the foreign proceedings with intent. The theory that babies don't know much? I beg to differ. She clearly knew something amazing was about to happen and acted with baited breath at such. Because babies are genius and they know things. Mostly amazing things.
