Weichert Real Estate Affiliates Nationwide ... - Franchising.com

Weichert Real Estate Affiliates (WREA) has added seven franchise sales reps to open more doors for the brand in 19 key states, covering both new territories and expansion in existing territories to meet market demands.?

(PRWEB) August 23, 2012 -?Already serving some 300 markets coast-to-coast, the 10-year-old Weichert franchise organization has grown steadily because, management says, "Weichert Works."

Weichert Real Estate Affiliates (WREA) has added seven franchise sales directors to take the ?Weichert Works? message to brokers in states from coast to coast. Currently, the franchise network has affiliates in 35 states. WREA is the franchise arm of Weichert, Realtors?, one of the nation?s largest privately owned providers of real estate and home ownership services. WREA was launched in January 2002 and was identified by Entrepreneur magazine early on (2005) as one of the fastest growing U.S. franchises.?

?We have been expanding steadily year by year,? said WREA National Vice President of Business Development Kevin Hill. The additional sales directors, he said, are poised to offer opportunities to people who "qualify? to join the now 10-year-old Weichert? network. Directors will confer with brokers ?who share the Weichert philosophy and are eager to develop a business model that works to increase and improve their own businesses as only a fully supportive franchise organization can do.?

The field Sales Directors and their 19 respective territories are: Nashville based Gabrielle Hanson, covering Tennessee and Kentucky; Minneapolis based Jim Pascale/Minnesota, the Dakotas, Iowa and West Wisconsin; Dallas, Texas based Bret Sauer/Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana; Montgomery, Alabama?s Jay Snowden II/Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle; Karen Squires of Ft. Mill, South Carolina/the Carolinas and Virginia; Southern California based Carey Schutt/Southern California and Arizona. In addition to these specific assignments, George Barlow has been named to the position of Sales Director/National Special Projects, and is charged with developing franchise opportunities in various markets throughout the country from his home in Austin, Texas, and WREA headquarters in Morris Plains, N.J.

The newly named franchise sales people are all experienced real estate professionals with high profile backgrounds in the franchise business. This is in keeping with the Weichert hiring model for management personnel. It is commonly known that, from founder Jim Weichert to Weichert Affiliates President Martin J. Rueter and the entire management staff, the team is made up of people who have been in the field as realtors, brokers, office owners, managers and sales people.

Twin Craft To Study Space Weather From Within Earth's Radiation Belts

Early Friday morning (just a few hours from now), if the Florida weather holds, two satellites are set to launch (here's the live-blogged play-by-play) from NASA's launch facility on Cape Canaveral on a mission to study the radiation belts that surround earth and (among other things) help make this planet friendly for life. The Radiation Belt Storm Probes mission features twin craft engineered by Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Lab which "will operate entirely within the radiation belts throughout their mission. When intense space weather occurs and the density and energy of particles within the belts increases, the probes will not have the luxury of going into a safe mode, as many other spacecraft must do during storms. The spacecraft engineers must therefore design probes and instruments that are 'hardened' to continue working even in the harshest conditions."

Is NCAA abusing discovery process in O'Bannon v. NCAA? Sonny Vaccaro targeted

The players' attorneys say Vaccaro criticized the NCAA long before this suit, and that the NCAA hasn't denied investigating Vaccaro and now wants to accuse him of improprieties.

"This is scorched-earth litigation," the players write.?

Counters the NCAA: "Vaccaro and his organization are at the heart of decisions and financial careers of former student athletes. Vaccaro's participation in gathering plaintiffs is directly relevant to the merits of the claims as well as the qualifications of the class members."?

Scientist at Work: The Best Cuisine on Antarctic Ice

Alexander Kumar, a physician and researcher at Concordia Station, writes from Antarctica, where he conducts scientific experiments for the European Space Agency?s human spaceflight program.

Saturday, Aug. 18

The golden age of polar exploration is long gone, and 100 years have passed since Robert F. Scott?s men had enjoyed pemmican hoosh, stewed penguin and Champagne, yet winter in Antarctica has become increasingly vibrant. The continuous and monotonous state of sensory deprivation caused by months of isolation means life on the station quickly becomes black and white in every sense ? except taste.

International crews endure the long, dark Antarctic winter by enjoying the food they spend their time preparing, and awaiting the biggest party in the Antarctic year: the winter solstice arriving in late June, marking midwinter.

Although no tourists can visit Concordia Station, it is mentioned in the ?Lonely Planet Antarctica Travel Guide? as featuring the continent?s best cuisine, with fine wines and seven-course lunches.

Living here is not all rosy. We are actually more isolated than astronauts living on the International Space Station, with no opportunity to escape living in complete isolation for nine months, even in case of a medical emergency. But having the best chef in Antarctica certainly helps, and consequently there is never a thought of escape among the crew at mealtimes.

There is no denying that food is important to overwintering in Antarctica ? vital, in fact. Regular mealtimes do more than regulate ?normal office hours? and the internal body clock during the months of continuous night in the Antarctic winter. Good food can save a crew from mutiny and bolster team spirit during those cold, dark, long and lonely months.

But food that is not prepared properly may leave a crew deficient in vitamins and minerals, or even suffering an outbreak of food poisoning that could be disastrous.

Scurvy related to vitamin C deficiency ravaged and plagued previous expeditions, including those to the polar regions. During one of Scott?s expeditions, the expedition doctor Edward Wilson fought what he thought was ptomaine poisoning, which was suspected of being a cause of scurvy.

Wilson did not know that the limes the expedition had purchased from the West Indies and brought to Antarctica had been transported in copper vats, which had zapped them of vitamin C, leaving the crew deficient in the vitamin and suffering from scurvy.

I think having a good chef, alongside a good mechanic, may be more important than having a good doctor overwinter in Antarctica.?This year Concordia Station?s winter chef is an Italian national, Giorgio Deidda, and we are very lucky to have him.

In the past six years, he has spent three winters in Antarctica at Concordia Station. After a career and education in some of the best restaurants in the Britain, Ireland, France, Italy and Switzerland, among other places, Giorgio says he ?most enjoys the freedom offered when cooking on in Antarctica.? He says he is ?continually challenged by the unique nature of this base, with so many nationalities present, eager to surprise and cater for the different cultures.? That would include me, a British-Indian, and the resident French and Italian crew members, as well as a Russian meteorologist, Igor Petenko.

Everyone contributes somehow. Dr. Petenko, for example, often cooks Russian specialties, including borscht and plov, and other crew members also share their own national recipes.

It is important to our crew to share and celebrate the heritage and diversity of our nationalities. Besides helping to prepare an Indian-themed evening, I hosted the world?s coldest, most extreme and remote Diamond Jubilee tea party in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. We enjoyed it outdoors on the roof of the base on June 5, and served scones and Fortnum & Mason tea in a temperature of minus 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with one of the clearest views available on the planet.

It was one of the shortest tea parties ever. We had to drink the tea immediately before it froze or the tea cup stuck to our lips. We ate the scones before they became set in inedible stone and our hands became frostbitten.

Concordia even hosts the world?s most southern and extreme cooking classes. Chef Deidda maintains an open-door policy, encouraging crew members to help prepare meals and learn new recipes. He then issues certificates based on the various levels of training attained by the crew members throughout the year.

The base has run out of all its fresh food supplies, and its extreme geographical location leaves Chef Deidda with only frozen or canned food, presenting him with interesting and unique challenges.

For example, since Concordia Station is at about 12,500 feet equivalent altitude, water boils at about 189 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning boiling food to ensure its safety can take considerably longer than when cooking at sea level.

Chef Deidda takes extra care in preparing his mother?s recipes, especially pasta. Different pastas require different times for cooking, and down here, he has to recalculate the times needed to reach ?al dente,? so he can serve each pasta to perfection.

In Antarctica there is always a reason to celebrate. So far, the crew has enjoyed Indian, Mexican, seafood and other themed nights, including birthdays. I celebrated my own birthday on the ice, alongside a fellow crew member, Sebastien Aubin, a marine chemist from France.

After preparing a surprise English breakfast made specially for me at brunch, Chef Deidda created a memorable five-course feast, a fusion of French, English and Indian flavors. His menu included a dome of foie gras on a bed of beans and red cabbage with Indian spices, a puff-pastry cornucopia with spring onion cream and scallops, followed by pain de campagne and, later, gin sorbet.

A buttered sea bass fillet with cider sauce and rice was later rounded off with birthday cake, accompanied by red fruits coulis and ice cream.?A crew member?s own locally sourced Calvados brandy and caffe corretto served as ?le digestif.?

Down here in such extreme temperatures, you have to be careful not to dribble in response to such mouth-watering meals, as even with an open mouth, it quickly freezes.

In Antarctica, planes travel through stations over a far-flung network that amounts to a modernized, motorized Silk Road.

On our Russian-themed night we even enjoyed Russian caviar, sourced by Chef Deidda in the Antarctic summer; he had arranged a trade with the nearest neighbor, Russia?s Vostok base: a swap of fine Italian coffee for the caviar.

In the absence of a greenhouse on base to cultivate our own ingredients, we can?t guarantee an organic seal for our cooking. Still, eating well here is not all that challenging, and there are certain benefits to living at this extreme: I make an ordinary coffee and then put it on the open windowsill. With the air at minus 110 degrees Fahrenheit, my iced coffee is ready in just three minutes.

New iPhone and mini iPad: What we expect from Apple

21 hrs.

Rumor is that Apple will hold a very special event on Sept. 12. Naturally, this means that we are compelled to gossip endlessly about what the Cupertino-based company might announce on that day.?Here's what we expect from Apple this fall.

The new iPhone
The main focus during Apple's rumored Sept. 12 event will most likely be the next-generation iPhone?? one that likely will not be called the "iPhone 5."?

According to the folks at?9to5?Mac, someone at Apple repair shop iLab?accumulated factory parts and assembled them,?producing the equivalent of a next-generation iPhone.?Additionally,?the staff of?iResq?has rounded up its own collection of allegedly leaked iPhone parts and found that they fit perfectly inside a body which has been floating around.

While these images, allegedly of new iPhones, are floating around, some of their?specs are more likely than others, based on additional reports ? from anonymous sources, naturally ??coming through reputable channels.

The next-generation iPhone may likely?look pretty darn similar to the iPhone 4S,?but it will probably have a?slightly thinner and larger screen?and a two-tone body. It sounds like the device's display will be?4 inches instead of 3.5 inches?in diagonal, and that it will be?more elongated (so that its aspect ratio is wider).

As far as the guts go,?9to5?Mac's Mark Gurman says?that prototype versions of the next-generation iPhone are rocking 1GB of RAM (which would double what is believed to be the current device's amount of RAM).?iMore's Rene Ritchie adds?that the device will be 4G LTE compatible???just like the new iPad.

Both prior reports as well as more recent part leaks suggest that the next iPhone will?likely?use a smaller 19-pin port?rather than the wider 30-in port found on current iPhones, iPads and iPods. (Say goodbye to your old chargers?? or hello to some awkward adapter???if that turns out to be the case.)

iMore's Rene Ritchie?? who has a credible track record when it comes to nailing down Apple event dates and topics?? suggests that the new smartphone will ship nine days after it is announced, on Sept. 21. This date?does line up with?what we've been hearing for a while, so we're keeping it circled on our calendars for the time being.

The smaller iPad
As if all the iPhone gossip isn't enough, there's also been much talk about a smaller iPad making an appearance during Apple's September event.

Based on the most reliable reports, this tablet should be close to eight inches diagonally (rather than 9.7 inches like the current models), offer a plain (non-Retina) display, and be priced in the $250 range (to compete with Google's Nexus 7).

Leaked parts suggest that the device will use a 19-pin connector like the next-generation iPhone and be offered in your choice of black or white.?Both 9to5?Mac's Seth Weintraub and Apple watcher?John Gruber?agree that chances are high that this smaller tablet will look a lot like a large iPod Touch, with?a smaller bezel.

The important thing to keep in mind
Apple rumors ? or tech rumors in general, for that matter???are frustrating beasts. They tend to come from anonymous sources who may or may not be familiar with matters, briefed on plans or even fully coherent. They can sometimes spin out of control and lead people to believe?that the next iPhone will cost $800?or be made of?a material that's not quite ready for primetime.

We try our best to assess rumors by using a magical formula which relies on the?track record?of a source or reporter, the habits of the folks in Cupertino, plain ol' logic, and experience.

We frequently reach out to the folks at Apple and ask them if they're feeling crazy enough to?chit-chat about their upcoming products, but it's their policy not to address such rumors.

So when all else fails, we often lean on this reporter's favorite movie quote: "A rumor's not a rumor that doesn't die."

Particularly persistent rumors tend to pan out ... except when they don't.?

So just pick your favorites and let's keep speculating until the cows come home?? or until?the Apple executives?come to the Moscone Center.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Potency of statins linked to muscle side effects

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? A study from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, published August 22 online by PLoS ONE, reports that muscle problems reported by patients taking statins were related to the strength or potency of the given cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Adverse effects such as muscle pain and weakness, reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) were related to a statin's potency, or the degree by which it typically lowers cholesterol at commonly prescribed doses.

"These findings underscore that stronger statins bear higher risk -- and should be used with greater caution and circumspection," said investigator Beatrice Golomb, MD, PhD, professor in the Departments of Medicine and Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego.

Golomb teamed up with researchers from California-based AdverseEvents, Inc., using the company's software platform to conduct a detailed examination of statin side-effect data from the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS). The study analyzed muscle-related adverse events linked to each of the major statin drugs in total of 147,789 AERS reports, gathered between July 2005 and March 2011.

Looking at the most commonly used statins -- both brand names and, when available, generic forms of the drugs -- rosuvastatin, the strongest statin, had the highest rates of reported problems. This was followed by atorvastatin, simvastatin, pravastatin, and lovastatin.

"These rankings closely match the individual potencies of each statin. Thus, the strength of the statin drug appears to be a dominant factor in determining how likely muscle problems are to occur," said Golomb, who directs the Statin Adverse Effects Study at UC San Diego.

Rates were determined for each statin by tallying reports of muscle side effects, standardized to the number of prescriptions filled for that drug. This was done for individual muscle side effects, as well as for side effects overall.

Some experts have maintained that rosuvastatin, the strongest statin, should have superior safety, because it is less fat soluble, and was thereby assumed not to penetrate into muscle cells as much as other statins. In addition, rosuvastatin is not cleared by common drug-clearance pathways that are sometimes involved in adverse drug interactions.

"The FDA AERS data analyzed in this study, however, suggests that the higher potency of rosuvastatin may more than offset any safety advantages due to such factors," Golomb said. She added that pooled analysis of statin studies in patients with stable heart disease do not indicate that higher strength statins result in a lower death rate. Therefore, "evidence showing that stronger statins may pose a greater risk of side effects is particularly important."

"Post-marketed studies utilizing AERS data are becoming increasingly important to understand the lasting side effect risks of widely used medications in disparate populations. Until recently, conducting such studies has been difficult due to the fractured and inaccessible nature of the FDA's raw data," said Brian Overstreet, CEO of AdverseEvents. The study utilized the company's unique data sourcing method called RxFilter?, which analyzed more than 140,000 AERS case reports filed with FDA over a six-year time period.

Statins are among the most widely taken prescription medications in the world, with over 30 million users in the United States alone and $19 billion in domestic sales. They are prescribed to lower cholesterol, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Their use has been linked to a variety of muscle-related side effects (together termed "statin myopathy") that occur in as many as 10 to 15 percent of all statin users. These include commonly reported problems such as pain and weakness, as well as life-threatening muscle breakdown, known as rhabdomyolysis. Statin myopathies can significantly increase pain and injury risk and affect mobility, especially in older individuals.

"Only a fraction of adverse effects are reported to the FDA, and a range of factors can influence reporting rates and accuracy of this information," Golomb said. "However, findings from this study align with -- and extend -- other forms of evidence."

For instance, an earlier study from Golomb's group at UC San Diego showed that patients with muscle problems related to statins often found relief from symptoms after stopping one statin. However, muscle pain or weakness consistently redeveloped if the patient was then placed on a higher potency statin, while patients placed on a lower potency statin had significantly lower risk of recurrence.

"Our findings suggest that individual statin potency is a critical determinant of how likely a statin is to cause problems," Golomb concluded. "This information should help guide prescribing decisions for statins by offering more information on the risk-benefit profile of the class. It should also be important for guiding decisions about statin selection and use after a patient has experienced a muscle-related adverse event."
