University escapes 'death penalty'

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: The school is also penalized by the Big Ten conference
  • NEW: The attorney for a sex abuse victim criticizes the process
  • The university says it agrees to sanctions and needs to change its culture
  • The fine will be used to help victims of child sexual abuse

(CNN) -- Saying it is "a stark wake-up call to everyone involved in college sports," the National Collegiate Athletic Association announced a $60 million fine against Penn State University on Monday and took away 14 seasons of football victories from the late Joe Paterno.

The school was also banned from the postseason for four years and will lose 20 football scholarships a year for four seasons, NCAA President Mark Emmert said.

Emmert said the unprecedented fine will be paid over five years to fund programs that serve the victims of child sexual abuse.

The Big Ten Conference also acted Monday, ruling Penn State ineligible for its conference title football game and said the Nittany Lions share of bowl revenues for the next four seasons -- approximately $13 million -- will be donated to charities that "protect children."

"The corrective and punitive measures the executive committee and the Division I board of directors have authorized should serve as a stark wake-up call to everyone in college sports," said Ed Ray, chairman of the NCAA's executive committee.

Penn State President Rodney Erickson said in a written statement that the university has accepted the NCAA decision and will not appeal.

"It is important to know we are entering a new chapter at Penn State and making necessary changes," he said. "We must create a culture in which people are not afraid to speak up, management is not compartmentalized, all are expected to demonstrate the highest ethical standards, and the operating philosophy is open, collegial, and collaborative."

Paterno, who coached at Penn State for 46 years, had been the all-time leader in major college football victories for a coach, with 409 wins. The NCAA's decision strikes 111 of those from his record.

The penalties are a major blow to one of college football's traditional powers, even though the two-time national champions avoided a suspension of at least one year.

A recent university study said the football program had a $161.5 million impact on Pennsylvania in 2009. The football team made a $53.2 million profit in 2010, according to CNN Money. The school made $24 million more through general merchandise sales, CNN Money reported.

"One of the grave dangers stemming from our love of sports is that the sports themselves can become too big to fail, indeed, too big to even challenge," Emmert said. "The result can be an erosion of academic values that are replaced by the value of hero worship and winning at all cost."

The penalties also deal an emotional blow to the Penn State community, one fan said.

"By essentially taking away the main pillar of the university, you are almost pulling the university down," former student Ujas Patel told CNN. What really hurts, he said, is taking wins away from Paterno, known affectionately by fans as "JoePa."

"Anybody who's gone to Penn State, that's something that really is going to bother people," he said.

The NCAA's punishments are part of the continued fallout from the child sex abuse scandal involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, who was convicted in late June of 45 of the 48 counts he faced involving 10 young victims.

"Throughout the past several weeks, PSU and the NCAA have imposed sanctions and taken what they perceive to be corrective measures," said Ben Andreozzi, attorney for the person identified as Victim No. 4 in the Sandusky case. "I am disappointed that no effort was made to consult the victims in this case to ensure that their voices were heard in this process.?After all, they are the ones who were victimized, not the NCAA or PSU.?"

iReporter: This is an end of an era

The punishments follow an independent investigation led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, whose report held four top Penn State officials, including Paterno, responsible for failing to stop the abuse.

Emmert said current players will be allowed to transfer to other schools without having to sit out a year, as is normally required, or they can stay and keep their grants, even if they don't play football. The restrictions mean that starting in 2014 the school cannot have more than 65 players on scholarship, and it can offer only 15 new scholarships each year for four years, beginning with next year's incoming recruits.

"I knew when I accepted the position that there would be tough times ahead," new coach Bill O'Brien said in a written statement. "But I am committed for the long term to Penn State and our student athletes."

On social media, some players wrote they would return next season as a team with a mission.

"PSU vs The World - Day 1 - ," tweeted tight end Garry Gilliam.

On Sunday, the 900-pound bronze statue of Paterno was removed from its place outside the 107,000-seat football stadium. Erickson issued a statement saying the statue is being stored in a "secure location." Another tribute to Paterno -- the university library that bears his name -- will remain as it is, Erickson said.

Photos: Final tributes, Paterno statue removed

The statue was removed exactly six months after Paterno died of lung cancer. He died less than three months after he coached his last game. Under Paterno's tenure as head coach, the Nittany Lions went undefeated five times and finished in the top 25 national rankings 35 times.

The Freeh report found several Penn State officials concealed evidence that Sandusky had sexually abused minors. Freeh concluded that Paterno could have prevented further sexual abuse had he taken action.

Sandusky is expected to be sentenced in September. His legal team has said it will appeal the convictions.

Two former university administrators are awaiting trial for their role in the scandal, and more charges are possible as the state's attorney general investigates what Penn State may have known about Sandusky's behavior.

Attachment Parenting International | Extra Pair of Eyes

Play MatesI cannot underscore the importance of a supportive spouse, partner, or mother?s helper when you?re a work-from-home parent of a mobile baby or preverbal toddler.

Just this week, my seven-month-old son has learned to climb the few steps between the family room, where my office is located, and the kitchen. I had hoped the steps would serve as a barrier between the two rooms for a little while longer, since the gap is too wide for a baby gate. After all, he wasn?t even rolling over consistently only a month ago. In just the last four weeks, he not only learned how to roll over but also how to scoot, sit up, and pull himself to a standing position. I?m envisioning him leaping off the couch in a couple months. I hope I?m not right.

As such, I?m finding it a little difficult to do certain types of projects without a second person keeping track of the baby ? projects that require deep thought for more than the couple minutes it takes for my baby to cross the room and scale the steps before I need to get up to fetch him. Understandably, his five- and four-year-old sisters do not want this responsibility ? and they shouldn?t have to, anyway ? although I am grateful when they play in the family room, as the baby stays put when his sisters are near.

So, these projects have been relegated to mostly overnight hours, when baby is asleep, or when my husband is home. Certainly, my husband can?t be on danger watch every moment he?s home, as he needs to do things like mow the yard and work on the cars, so I try to work it out with him a couple days in advance so he can adjust his to-do list for the week. But as a parent, he does share the responsibility.

It doesn?t mean your spouse or partner isn?t being reasonable if he or she doesn?t want to watch the kids while you work every night. It?s one of those things you have to work out. For some families, it works out better to hire a mother?s helper than to rely on a spouse or partner, just because they?re so tired after a long day?s work themselves. But that might make you feel resentful. Both of you need to voice your expectations and concerns regarding your work-home situation, and find a solution that works for both of you.

When my girls were young, being only a year apart, I hired a mother?s helper during the day, as working with two babies at home is a bigger deal than with one baby. Or maybe, I think it?s easier now because I?ve finally got the hang of it? Either way, I found a mother?s helper to be critical when I was working on tough projects. I requested a mother?s helper ? usually my mom, although I have a grandmotherly neighbor and a teen from church who also like the job ? as needed, and basically she served the purpose of an extra pair of eyes. I still cuddled with my kids, fed them, and changed their diapers, but when I needed an extra minute to finish my thought, my mother?s helper would fill in the gap. She would also prepare meals, throw in the laundry, pick up the toys, and do other odds-and-ends so that when I took a break from the project, I could spend it giving undivided attention to my kids rather than on some chore. While she was here, my babies were always in the same room with me.

I know some work-from-home parents who do use a nanny or babysitter or put their children in daycare while they work, and that?s OK. I also know of some single parents who are able to work from home without hiring help. That?s amazing! But, it doesn?t mean you?re any less of a parent if you do need an extra pair of eyes, or hands. A mother?s helper, or at least help from your parenting partner, may be just what you need to balance work with home while keeping your attachment bond as a priority.

PFT: Peyton wishes Broncos went away to camp

Manning Camp FootballAP

If Peyton Manning had his way, the Broncos would buck the growing trend toward having training camp at their regular facility.

Denver will open camp at its headquarters in Dove Valley for the 10th straight year, after previously going to the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

And as nice as it is, and convenient, Manning would rather go away for the summer.

?I do,? Manning told Mike Klis of the Denver Post. ?I wish we went away. I know we stay there at the facility and we stay at a hotel. I?ve heard coach [John] Fox and John Elway talk about potentially [moving away] again. I think there?s something about going to a different site and just homing in on football.

?It?s not as long as it used to be, but there?s definitely some team bonding that occurs that I think can win a game for you down the line. Having breakfast with a guy, watching some film in the room with a guy; I think it helps.?

Manning acknowledged that not everyone shares his enthusiasm, which may stem from missing camp last year as well.

?I understand why linemen probably don?t enjoy it as much because they?re banging on each other,? Manning said. ?Quarterbacks don?t get hit as much, so I probably have a little different point of view. But if you love football, which I do, you love training camp.?

There?s a constant debate about the merits of going away, and it?s swinging toward the stay-at-homes now.

With the Bengals bypassing their annual trip to Georgetown, Ky. to work at Paul Brown Stadium, 18 of the league?s 32 teams now have ?camp? at the same place they have practice during the regular season.

In 2000, only five of the 31 teams stayed home. This year, the, Bills, Colts, Chiefs, Jets, Raiders, Steelers, Cardinals, Panthers, Bears, Cowboys, Packers, Vikings, Giants and Eagles will pack up and make the move.

The biggest hassle remains the logistics of a move, as teams have to pack up not just shoulder pads and helmets, but the entire weight room and training room, computers and copiers for the office and hundreds of little things you never think of such as sunscreen for the staff.

But the camaraderie you can build away from home is hard to replace. It?s no surprise Fox has mentioned leaving home to Manning, because he was always an advocate of camp when he coached the Panthers, who go 85 miles away to Wofford College every year.

NY marks 1 year of gay marriage, impact unclear

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York became the largest and most influential state to legalize gay marriage one year ago, raising supporters' hopes that it would boost national momentum and pump money into the state with a flurry of weddings from Manhattan to Niagara Falls.

As the anniversary nears Tuesday, the law's effects are noticeable if hard to measure.

Thousands of same-sex couples have wed across New York, but it's unclear just how many, partly because marriage applicants aren't required to identify themselves by gender. The wedding business is up, but some planners in New York City say it's not booming.

And while President Barack Obama announced support this year for gay marriage, no state has enacted a law allowing it since New York. And opponents note that North Carolina voters banned it.

One thing is clear: legalizing gay marriage in the cultural, media and business hub of New York City amped up the national spotlight on the issue.

"Do you know I still have people come up to me and congratulate me on my wedding?" said Carol Anastasio, who was among the first bouquet-waving, teary-eyed newlyweds when New York legalized gay marriage July 24, 2011. News crews swarmed Anastasio and Mimi Brown outside the city clerk's office in Manhattan.

"I work in a public park so I'm outdoors a lot and people will be walking a dog: 'I thought that was you! I saw you in the paper! That's great!'" said Anastasio, a city parks manager. "It's really amazing how it just continues."

New York inked its gay marriage law with a nail-biting state Senate vote on the night of June 24, 2011, after weeks of intensive lobbying by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Exactly one month later, New York became the sixth and largest state to allow gay weddings ? more than doubling the number of same-sex couples eligible to wed.

The new law was ushered in with a whirlwind of weddings that started in the minutes after midnight from Niagara Falls to New York City.

"When it became a reality in New York, that's when I think most Americans started to realize that this is something we'll all be dealing with and started thinking about it seriously," said Marty Rouse, national field director for the Human Rights Campaign. "The momentum from New York can't be underestimated. After Massachusetts becoming the first state, nothing has had that influence."

Rouse said that because of New York's size and influence, people around the country had to think seriously about what legalization meant for them and their families.

Even as Obama announced his support in May, North Carolina voters that week approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman. State lawmakers in Maryland and Washington passed same-sex marriage laws, but voters will have a final say in November over whether the measures will take effect. The issue is also on the ballot this fall in Maine and Minnesota, where opponents are ready to spend up to $20 million to keep the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.

Opponents note that despite legislative victories in states like New York, voters have rejected gay marriage in all 32 states where it has been on the ballot.

"As it passes, people begin to realize that it's more than two people standing at the altar, it literally alters all of society," said Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council.

Ahead of its passage, an analysis by the New York Senate's independent Democratic conference predicted there would be up to 66,500 same-sex weddings in the first three years that would generate $311 million in increased revenue and economic activity.

A year out, the exact number of gay couples wed statewide is unknown. New York City, where most gay people are wed in the state, did not immediately have any numbers. At least 3,424 same-sex marriages occurred outside of the city by mid-July, according to state Department of Health figures.

People involved in New York City's wedding industry report only a mild surge in business. The prevailing view among vendors is that many gay couples already had celebrated their unions before the legislation was passed. Now all they really want is the legal paperwork, not a four-tier cake.

"The kind of people who were throwing lavish parties or celebrations were celebrating with or without the piece of paper," said Sarah Cohen, owner of Blossom and Branch, a Brooklyn-based boutique floral design studio. She guessed the law's passage translated to two or three more weddings this year than she would typically handle.

The Rev. Will Mercer, a New York City-based Christian minister, said gay weddings now comprise a third of his total business ? generally about 150 ceremonies a year. But at least half of them choose quiet ceremonies with only about a dozen close family members or friends.

"The wedding is part of their whole experience during their visit to the city," Mercer said.

The change was more noticeable in the "honeymoon capital" of Niagara Falls where the city clerk issued 459 marriage licenses in the year after passage, compared with 382 the previous year.

"That's business we wouldn't have had otherwise," said Sally Fedell, whose Falls Wedding Chapel is one of several in town.

But proponents say the true impact goes beyond numbers. New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who married her longtime partner Kim Catullo in May, said she's been struck by the goodwill same-sex marriage has generated around the city, and not just among supporters.

"I go to places where you think based on the sign over the door: This place is conservative, they're not going to want to see the ring, ask how it was, congratulate me," she said. "Couldn't be more wrong."

Big Education Ape: Florida BOE Member Belittles Local School ...

The arrogance of Florida?s Jeb Bush?s education policy establishment reared its head in Tuesday?s Fort Lauderdale meeting. From Leslie Postal in the?Orlando Sentinel:
Board member?Akshay Desai, a physician from Tampa, said he was glad the state was able to ?fend off? attacks from those, in his view, who are ?trying to discredit? testing in Florida. He mentioned a certain ?constituency? that does like testing, apparently a reference to Florida school boards approving resolutions that argued an over emphasis on standardized testing was hurting education in Florida.
?We have been able to continue to fend off the unnecessary attacks on the A+ system,? he said, adding that he thought Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson had done a good job answering?

Acer Aspire S5 review: is this innovative Ultrabook worth $1,400?

Acer Aspire S5 review

With dozens and dozens of Ultrabooks on parade, you'd be forgiven if one skinny laptop with an ultra-low voltage processor started to look like the next. Even so, it's tough to forget the Acer Aspire S5: of all the ultraportables we've seen these last nine months, this is the only one with a motorized port cover. Yeah, that one. It's an intriguing product, to be sure, and the stakes are especially high given that $1,400 price: you'd have to really enjoy that form factor (and everything else) to choose it over some less expensive ultraportable. So is it worth it? Is that drop-down door anything more than a gimmick? Questions for the ages, and ones we'll tackle in our full review after the break.
