latest news: Reviews of New DVD Movie Releases - Entertainment

Here is a list of new DVD movie releases with accompanying reviews and a brief film synopsis.

The Back-up Plan " is a romantic comedy about a woman (Zoe) who gets tired of waiting for Mr. Right to come along and sweep her off her feet and decides to become pregnant through artificial insemination. The real fun starts however when she meets Stan and discovers she may have acted a bit hurriedly. In deciding to become pregnant artificially, she may have just derailed fate's long awaited intervention on her love life.

Rating: IMDB: 4/10, Rotten Tomatoes: 20%, Metacritic: 34/100

Consensus: Disappointing. While Jennifer Lopez remains sexy and appealing as ever, the story however fails to offer anything other than a weak laugh and a lot of embarrassment, either for J-Lo or for having watched this movie in the first place.

Advice: skip it if you're looking for new DVD movie releases to watch.

City Island "a comedy film about a dysfunctional family that has their life interrupted, and changed (for better or for worse) by a visiting ex-con brought home by the family's patriarch.

Rating: IMDB: 7/10, Rotten Tomatoes: 81%, Metacritic: 66/100

Consensus: rollicking fun comedy that is as every bit as entertaining as the family's secrets and their dysfunctionally, functional lives.

Advice: One of only a few films in this new batch of new DVD movie releases ever to get a high score from all three major review websites. Definitely one film you shouldn't miss.

The Last Song " a story about a father who tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter through the only thing they both have in common: music.

Rating: IMDB: 3/10, Rotten Tomatoes: 19%, Metacritic: 33/100

Consensus: Although Nicolas Sparks is an excellent writer of romance novels, and have had good adaptations of his other novels, this isn't one of them. While generally watchable, The Last Song still leaves a lot to be desired especially for folks looking for more than just a bit of a tear-jerker movie.

Advice: Unless you're a Miley Cyrus' or a Nicholas Sparks' fan, there's nothing in here you'd miss except the same clichs from a dozen other movies made better.

Kick-Ass " an adaptation based from the comic of the same name, Kick-ass is about a high school student who loves comic books who decides to become a superhero " except without powers. As he ventures into the world of vigilantism, he discovers why most people DO NOT TRY to become superheroes.

Rating: IMDB: unrated, Rotten Tomatoes: 76%, Metacritic: 66/100

Consensus: Witty and enjoyable, Kick-Ass will leave fans of the comics a bit satisfied considering the awful record of comic adaptations in the film industry. Those unfamiliar with the comics will be pleasantly surprised at the film's fun and entertaining factor.

Advice: If you are a fan of the comic series, you'd better not miss this one, even if just for the simple reason of not missing it. However, if you're one of those who hate senseless violence or violence just for the sheer fun of it, this movie is not for you.

These are just a few of the new DVD movie releases out in DVD and retail stores today. New titles are released every week with accompanying reviews and film synopsis along with it.

ScienceOnline2012 interview with Mark Henderson

Every year I ask some of the attendees of the ScienceOnline conferences to tell me (and my readers) more about themselves, their careers, current projects and their views on the use of the Web in science, science education or science communication. So now we continue with the participants of ScienceOnline2012. See all the interviews in this series here.

Today my guest is Mark Henderson (personal blog, work blog, Twitter).

Welcome to A Blog Around The Clock. Would you, please, tell my readers a little bit more about yourself? Where are you coming from (both geographically and philosophically)? What is your background? Any scientific education?

I?m now Head of Communications at the Wellcome Trust, the UK based biomedical research charity. Before that I was Science Editor of The Times in London for 11 years. And before that I really had very little to do with science at all. I did a history degree, and got into science writing serendipitously when I was asked/told to take the brief by an editor. It was a perfect move for me.

What I?d never really appreciated before starting to write about science was that it isn?t, as Carl Sagan put it, just a body of knowledge. It?s also a way of thinking.

Tell us a little more about your career trajectory so far: interesting projects past and present?

I?ve just published a book called The Geek Manifesto, which explores the often difficult relationship between science and politics. It argues that too few politicians and civil servants grasp that Sagan maxim, and as a result tend to let science down, and fail to use its methods as they could to deliver better policy. And that?s partly the fault of those of us who do love and appreciate science ? we don?t make ourselves felt as a political voice.

What is taking up the most of your time and passion these days? What are your goals?

One of the big ideas of the book is that it?s up to geeks, bloggers, skeptics, rationalists, scientists to turn the value we place on scientific thinking into a stronger political force. So my talks, blogging and campaigning are very much aimed at encouraging people who care about these issues to lobby their political representatives and to complain constructively, about both politics and the media.

In my day job at the Wellcome Trust, I?m particularly interested in learning how best to exploit the disruptive technology of the web to promote both the Trust and the fields of science it supports, and to engage the public and opinion-formers more successfully. It used to be that ?source? organisations like the Trust generally had to communicate through third parties. That?s not really true any more.

What aspect of science communication and/or particular use of the Web in science interests you the most?

It?s that ability to reach audiences directly, and to build communities that discuss science and the issues that surround it. The wonderful thing about blogs and Twitter is the ability to interact with scientists, writers and others all over the world ? it was a remarkable feeling at ScienceOnline this year to meet so many people I felt I knew through blogs and Twitter, but who I?d not yet met in the flesh.

How does (if it does) blogging figure in your work? How about social networks, e.g., Twitter, Google Plus and Facebook? Do you find all this online activity to be a net positive (or even a necessity) in what you do?

I have a personal blog around the book. The Wellcome Trust also has a blog for which I?m ultimately responsible. I principally use Twitter for science purposes ? Facebook is mostly for friends, though I?m trying to use it better for science communication and engagement too.

I can?t actually imagine professional or personal life without online activity now. When I was at The Times, I found the introduction of the paywall very difficult. I found ways to keep going on Twitter, but it did cut my work off from people I thought might otherwise be interested in it.

When and how did you first discover science blogs? What are some of your favourites? Have you discovered any cool science blogs by the participants at the Conference?

I suppose I really started getting into science blogs around 2007 to 2008. I have too many favourites to list many, but I always particularly valued Daniel MacArthur?s Genetic Future blog. Good to see he?s been back at Genomes Unzipped recently.

What was the best aspect of ScienceOnline2012 for you? Any suggestions for next year? Is there anything that happened at this Conference ? a session, something someone said or did or wrote ? that will change the way you think about science communication, or something that you will take with you to your job, blog-reading and blog-writing?

I loved meeting people I knew online for the first time ? people like Misha Angrist and Maryn McKenna whose work I really enjoy and admire. The sessions on the politics of science were really lively. And as I?d literally just started at the Wellcome Trust then, it was especially interesting to explore some of what an organisation like us could do in this space. I hope to be able to announce some exciting developments that will be informed by what I learnt at ScienceOnline very soon?

Thank you! Hope to see you again in January.

Enrich Your Life With These Great Self Help Tips! | Education Job for ...

Engaging in self help is a smart way to change your life in a positive manner. This may make be confusing as to where to begin with making these positive life changes. This article will contain the tips you need to start helping yourself with personal development.

Unless you are self-sufficient, you cannot expect to be able to care for another person. No matter how much progress you have made in your personal development, always make resting and restoring yourself a top priority.

Track your progress better through proper organization. If you break big goals down into little sub-goals, you will gain confidence as you achieve the sub-goals. Use a daily planner to track your progress, or write down your goals and successes in a journal or diary.

Begin a fund for emergency purposes. It?s common for us to add even more charges to our already overtaxed credit cards whenever an unforeseen expense arises, no matter how large or small. Putting a few dollars a week into an emergency fund will add up over time. This money can help out in the short and long term because debt continues decreasing.

Seek out texts that encourage you. Some people could benefit from a book of motivational quotes, while others find that religious text inspires them. Sometimes having a physical representation of comfort can help you better manage your day-to-day life.

Go with a friend to see a movie you enjoy. This places you in a social situation, but you won?t have to extensively socialize with others. This will also help you get used to crowds.

If you have had several consecutive failings, take a moment to analyze what you?re doing wrong. Compare your goals with the goals of others that you can research online. You might need to be more realistic or gain the proper information you need to succeed.

You must take care of yourself if you expect to do a good job caring for others. Wherever you are mentally and emotionally, always take time to relax and check in with your needs.

All people are susceptible to food temptations. Stress can harm your body, and life is too short to worry about every little thing.

Compliment other people. When you make an effort to treat others kindly, it becomes easier to think of yourself in kinder terms.

Exercise is for everybody. It is not reserved for those who wish to slim down. There are tons of reasons to exercise. As you work out, your body will release chemicals necessary to relieving your stress.

A positive attitude is key to personal growth. Being a pessimistic sourpuss will hinder your efforts to get ahead and could even make your situation worse. Try remaining positive so that you can reach your goals.

For people with serious problems, therapy may be the best answer. Self help books can help you, but do not expect these methods to replace a doctor who can assess your situation personally. Success is sometimes motivated by being helped through simply talking. Books can?t interact with people the way a trained psychiatrist is able to.

Conquer clutter and disorganization in all aspects of your life. If you are able to get your life organized and keep it that way, you will see a real boost to your self-confidence. Your stress level will also diminish as your life becomes more orderly. Knowing where all of your things are is a great feeling.

Let your individual beliefs shape your course for achieving enhanced personal development. Focusing on areas you don?t value, doesn?t make sense. Instead, work on aspects of your life you want to improve that mesh well with your individual beliefs. Implementing a plan for personal development can improve both your work and home life in the future.

You can learn how to handle difficult problems without over-reacting. If you can learn how to stay cool during high-stress situations, you are likely to gain the confidence that you need to conquer just about anything in your daily life. Take a moment and focus on your breathing technique.

Try new things. Challenging yourself opens up a whole world of possibilities. Learning about something new, along with the acquisition of new skills could easily be gained. You may even be able to accomplish something previously not achieved by anyone. Do something new and unique, instead of copying others.

Realize that you have physical limits when it comes to accomplishing something. While you should always give it your all, understand when you have reached your limit. Preserving your body is goal number one, as other goals are a bit hard to reach when you are collapsed on the ground. You will never improve yourself if you neglect your body in the pursuit of personal development.

Your body?s health influences the well-being of your mind. Partake in regular exercise and stick to a nutritious diet. Always remember that healthy minds and bodies walk through life together.

It may become discouraging to begin developing better personal habits and lifestyles, but once you start noticing your life developing towards a better future, you will never want to stop. You can always develop better ways to do things and it?s important to always try hard towards any personal development goals you have.

Integrated Marketing

From a recent BusinessWeek article: ?If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it, is such a clich? that it has spawned its own clich?: If it ain?t broke, break it. Unfortunately, that?s just what many companies do unwittingly to their branding programs, playing into the hands of public enemy No. 1 in today?s marketing environment: fragmentation.? More and more television networks, radio stations, print titles, and outdoor billboards are competing for attention, and new marketing channels pop up every day, from apps to publicity stunts and beyond. The number of places we hit people with marketing messages these days is growing a lot faster than the number of eyeballs that can take them in, and as a result audiences (and attention spans) are becoming increasingly fragmented. That reduces the chance any message has of getting through? The good news is that there is a powerful way to overcome fragmentation: integration. But don?t be deceived?it?s more difficult than it appears?Integration means communicating a consistent identity from message to message, and medium to medium, and (more importantly) delivering consistently on that identity.??

Honing Negotiation Skills

?Negotiation is your opportunity to demonstrate your commitment (and your company?s) to a long-term relationship and to maximizing value for both parties (for those who sell to businesses, value is synonymous with return-on-investment). Sales negotiation can be a formal event (at a specific time and date) or it can be an ongoing theme at different points in the sales process. It?s beyond price and includes the entire value proposition. As a professional you?re seeking a mutually beneficial relationship with your prospects and customers (not something that benefits only you or them). Practiced and applied, negotiation skills can increase the level of trust and credibility you and your company have with your prospects and customers.?? DEA proposes tracking all cars on Utah highway - is your street next?

11 hrs.

Devin Coldewey

Law enforcement officials have been systematically tracking license plates for a long time ? at the border, for instance. But a DEA project in Utah may be overstepping the bounds of good governance, tracking every vehicle on a major highway and sharing the data with thousands of other agencies.

Using official or hidden cameras to snap pictures of license plates isn't a new technology by any means, though it is proliferating rather quickly. In fact, this writer got a ticket from one just last week. But they are usually restricted to monitoring traffic or borders. Recently, however, police have begun centralizing records in a number of places: Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C. So now a state would not only know when you crossed the border, but when you entered a city, when you turned at various intersections and which way, and it is holding all that data for up to three years.

The DEA is proposing such a system for the Utah portion of the?Interstate 15 highway, citing installations in California and Texas "drug trafficking corridors" and border use. The ACLU and?Utah's legislators are skeptical that such a measure is lawful or well-advised.

There are already automatic license plate recorders in place in Utah, but the DEA would centralize the data and make it accessible to law enforcement around the country. Data would be kept on record for two years.

Now, argues the ACLU, it's one thing for an intersection to record traffic violations and license plates??after all, you're in public. And it's another for a police department to monitor state highways?for a known and wanted plate or vehicle. But a federally?run program that appears to be created with the object of disbursing the information nationally is a serious step up in scope, and there doesn't appear to be much in the way of limitation or documentation, contends the civil liberties organization.

The DEA says the tracking data would only be used in the pursuit of drug traffickers and for investigation of "serious crimes." But as the ACLU points out, and as history has shown when other valuable data (like GPS, internet records and DNA) has been made accessible to law enforcement, the cases for which sensitive data is used tend to multiply over time ? and create new privacy concerns.
