The Advantages Of Social Media Marketing For Small Business | ll7 ...

Your current marketing strategy for you small business may be working well for you, but how can you take it to the next level? Specifically ? how can you take it to the next level using social media?

Social media might seem like a crowded world, but if you harness it correctly, you have the ability to attract that crowded world.

First, you need to run your spreadsheets. how much can you realistically invest someone?s time into social media? Major Fortune 500 companies have teams dedicated to social media efforts, but your small business just may not have the resources. And while its free to sign up for Facebook and Twitter, the time and resources you put into it is certainly not free.

Business Grow offers some great tips to help you figure out the best way to implement a social media plan into your business? marketing efforts.

They first recommend surveying your customers and your competitors. Are your customers spending a couple hours of their time on Facebook each day? Are your competitors offering special deals via Twitter that is sending sales skyrocketing? if you?re the first in your company?s niche in your area to turn to social media, you can certainly have the leg up on the competition. Take advantage of that.

For the younger generation of small business owners, social media is almost second nature. if you don?t feel totally comfortable, learn the basics. there are plenty of tutorials sprinkled throughout the Internet that can teach you how to get the most out of the many different social networks.

Next you need a goal. whether its a number of followers, level of interaction or even a business sales goal as a result of social media. Set up something that?s realistic and try to achieve it just as you would with traditional marketing tactics.

If you?re still struggling to figure out to make the most out of your Facebook page, it might not hurt to invest in a social media consultant of some sort. After a few rides on the big bike with an expert, you?ll be riding alone in no time.

I mentioned social media versus ?traditional? marketing tactics. Well, social media is quickly becoming the traditional way of marketing your company. It?s not an add on, it shouldn?t be viewed as a chore. It?s a resource that if done right can be a huge benefit to your company. Take advantage of this opportunity! nothing is instantaneous, but social media is pretty close. Waiting for an advertisement in the newspaper takes time. you can get an idea on how a product would sell by posting a photo of it on Facebook and asking your fans for their reaction. The possibilities are endless.

think of entering social media like the first time you went to a small business banking roundtable, or a chamber of commerce meeting. you didn?t know anyone, you didn?t have any connections, but slowly and surely, you began developing those relationships.

Police follow discarded wrappers to theft suspects

Twitter usage doubles among online adults: Pew

17 hrs.

The number of online American?adults who use Twitter on a typical day has doubled since last May, according to a new report about the short-messaging site.

"Some 15 percent of online adults?use Twitter as of February 2012, and 8 percent do so on a typical day," Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project said in the report.

While the 15 percent figure is "similar to the 13 percent of such adults who (said they used Twitter) ... in May 2011," the actual "proportion of online adults who use Twitter on a typical day has doubled" since last May, and "quadrupled since late 2010," Pew said.

"At?that point just 2 percent of online adults used Twitter on a typical day," the research organization said.?"The rise of smartphones might account for some of the uptick in usage because smartphone users are particularly likely to be using Twitter."

"I do think it's notable that typical day Twitter usage is growing even as the overall usage stats have remained fairly consistent,"?Aaron Smith, Pew senior research specialist, told msnbc.com. That "would imply that existing Twitter users are growing more engaged over time,?with mobile being a big part of that story," he said.

Twitter's users are also trending young: Pew found?that 31 percent of 18-to-24-year-olds use Twitter. Among those in the 18-to-29-year-old age range, 26 percent use Twitter, "nearly double the rate of those who are ages 30 to 49."

Twitter is estimated to have nearly 600 million registered?users worldwide,?compared to Facebook's 900-million-plus-and-closing-in-on-1-billion figure.?

Upscale London boroughs say no no no to BT's broadband revolution, ugly green boxes

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/chelsea-kensington-council-reject-bt-broadband/

Between all of the delays, disappointment and a general lack of availability, many Brits can't seem to catch a break when it comes to getting up to speed with fast internet -- but this time it could be their own fault. BT's fiber optic rollout plans came to a screeching halt in Chelsea and Kensington after a staggering 96 of 108 applications for big green street cabinets housing the fiber were flat-out rejected. Neither local council is prepared to clutter its pristine streets with the "ugly" boxes. The firm said it'll concentrate on nearby areas that "have shown a greater eagerness to enjoy the benefits of broadband." It's a good thing there are no plans to paint their famous telephone booths green, or those might be out of a job as well.

'Vampire' plague victim spurs gruesome debate

What may have been an exorcism of a vampire in Venice is now drawing bad blood among scientists arguing over whether gravediggers were attempting to defeat an undead monster.

The controversy begins with a mass grave of 16th-century plague victims on the Venetian island of Nuovo Lazzaretto. The remains of a woman there apparently had a brick shoved in her mouth, perhaps to exorcise the corpse in what may have been the first vampire burial known in archaeology, said forensic anthropologist Matteo Borrini of the University of Florence in Italy.

Vampire superstitions were common when plague devastated Europe, and much, if not all, of this folklore could be due to misconceptions about the natural stages of decomposition, Borrini said. The recently dead can often appear unnervingly alive. As the corpse's skin shrinks and pulls back, for example, hair and nails may appear to grow after death.

7 ghoulish archaeological finds

The remains of the woman were apparently wrapped in a shroud, based on the position of her collarbone, Borrini suggested. A corpse might appear to have chewed through its shroud because of corrosive fluids it spewed as it decayed, perhaps frightening gravediggers into thinking it was a vampire. [ Our 10 Favorite Vampires ]

Vampire myths link the monsters with contagions, and the plague ran rampant in Venice in 1576, killing as many as 50,000 people, nearly a third of the city, including famed Renaissance artist Titian. The gravediggers that ran across this corpse may have wanted to prevent a vampire from ravaging the city further with pestilence, Borrini and his colleague Emilio Nuzzolese suggested in the Journal of Forensic Sciences in 2010. The "vampire" has since been discussed on Italian national TV and a National Geographic documentary.

    1. 16-year-old student sets off buzz over Newtonian physics

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: A research paper that claims to fill in a gap in Isaac Newton's formulas for the physics of falling objects has drawn worldwide attention to a 16-year-old student in Germany, but physicists are reserving judgment until they've seen the proof.

However, now other researchers are openly deriding this claim. Where some might see an exorcism, these researchers see a brick accidentally falling into a skull's mouth.

"I find surprising that the reviewers of an important journal such as the Journal of Forensic Sciences had given permission to publish the article of Nuzzolese and Borrini with inadequate scientific evidence to support their hypothesis," physical anthropologist Simona Minozzi at the University of Pisa in Italy told LiveScience.

To start with, photos of the site where the purported vampire was found show her remains were surrounded by stones, bricks and tiles, Minozzi said. They also note the jaws of corpses often gape open, allowing any number of items to fall in ? for instance, they note a skeleton with a thighbone in its mouth was found in the cemetery of Vecchio Lazzaretto in Venice.

They also note there is no clear evidence of a shroud, as coffin walls might also explain the position of the collarbone. They add that the legend of the so-called nachzehrer, or " shroud-eaters," were apparently tightly confined to the East German region and not Italy. Minozzi and her colleagues detailed their argument in the May issue of the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

7 ghoulish archaeological finds

Minozzi called the vampire idea "nonsense." "Unfortunately, this is a common practice in the last few years in Italy," she said. "This is probably due to the strong cutting of funds for research in Italy, so researchers seek to attract attention and money through sensational discoveries that often have little to do with science."

Borrini and his colleagues strongly rebut the argument over their analysis. They discussed how the physical details of the site supported their interpretation in a response in the May issue of the Journal of Forensic Sciences, and that while the legend of the nachzehrer was found in Germanic areas, Venice was a crossroads during the epoch in which such legends from distant lands might have circulated.

"Regarding the criticism of my Italian colleagues, I have to admit that it's a quite unpleasant situation," Borrini said. "It seems that the main reasons of the interest in my research is its mass media success. Well, I want to be clear regarding this ? I never looked for the media."
