Moscow police detain 40 as gay activists demand right to hold parade, face Christian protest

MOSCOW (AP) ? Gay activists tried to stage two demonstrations in Moscow on Sunday to demand the right to hold a gay pride parade in the Russian capital, but they were blocked first by Orthodox Christian opponents and then by police, who detained a total of about 40 people from both sides.

The gay activists first gathered outside the city council building, where a few scuffles occurred as their opponents tried to disrupt the demonstration, decrying homosexuality as a sin. After police broke up that protest, another group tried to stage a second protest at city hall, but once again police moved in and detained participants, including prominent gay rights activist Nikolai Alexeyev.

The majority of those detained were gay activists, but some of the Christian demonstrators also were pushed into police buses. Police said about 40 people were detained in all.

Homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but anti-gay sentiment remains strong.

Activists have long petitioned the Moscow government for permission to stage such a parade, but have always been denied. Former Mayor Yuri Luzhkov described gay parades as "satanic," while current Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has said he disapproves of gay gatherings because they could offend the religious beliefs of many Russians.

Gay activist Galina Kaptur criticized city authorities for treating homosexuality as a contagious disease that would be spread through society if gays were allowed to hold a parade.

"It's as if they thought that if all left-handed people held a parade, then afterward everyone would become left-handed," Kaptur said. "This is wrong."

Among the opponents of gay rights was Dmitry Tsarionov, who spoke to the crowd in front of a sign that said "Moscow is not Sodom."

"I will not allow perverts to bring the wrath of God onto our city," he said. "I want our children to live in a country where a sin that so awfully distorts human nature is not preached in schools."

This month, Alexeyev became the first person convicted under a new law in St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, which makes it a crime to spread "gay propaganda" among minors. Alexeyev was charged after he picketed St. Petersburg's city hall with a placard that said "homosexuality is not a perversion." He was fined 5,000 rubles (about $170).

The Russian parliament is considering extending the measure nationwide, which gay activists say would make it even easier to ban their public demonstrations.

98% The Island President

In the simultaneously inspiring and harrowing documentary "The Island President," Mohamed Nasheed was elected to the presidency of the Maldives, a 2000 island archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean, bringing an end to a thirty-year repressive dictatorship in 2008. But a new struggle presents itself in global warming. Currently, the effects there can be seen in erosion and the groundwater. All of which could lead to a unique culture and nation being literally wiped from the map, and its country's population turned into 'environmental refugees.' So, instead of spending valuable resources on health care and education, he has to go with sea walls and other protective measures. So, through this example, we get a disturbing look at what all of our futures may be like if we do not change our ways very soon.(With the use of some great shots, the Maldvies do seem like something out of speculative fiction.) If our behavior affects all others across the globe, then why can't the butterfly flap its wings in the opposite direction, which is where Nasheed comes in, not only in speaking across the world(I'm not recommending invoking World War II usually in speehces, but if you have to, mention Czechoslovakia), but also in proposing to make his country entirely carbon neutral in 10 years by relying on renewable energy sources like solar and wind, making the Maldives an example for the rest of the world. This is harder than it sounds with the economic interests of countries like China and India making things especially difficult with a memorable climax at the climate conference at Copenhagen in 2009. But sadly, Nasheed did not have that much time as he was ousted in a threatened coup in February of this year.

Insight: Pioneer Ireland fears austerity was in vain

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Returning from an annual European trade show last month on a flight packed with successful Irish retailers, Ian Martin felt his country's battered economy might finally be turning around.

A supplier of first aid and hygiene products to Irish companies, Martin has spent the last four years trimming costs, laying off some staff and cutting the hours of other employees.

Ireland's government has been doing the same, making inroads into an enormous budget deficit and recapitalizing a near-collapsed banking system. The policies have been painful - the Irish consume 12 percent less than they did in 2007 - but Dublin has won praise around Europe for acting hard and fast.

Unfortunately, it may not matter. The political crisis in Greece and banking woes in Spain now threaten to end the modest Irish recovery spotted by Martin on last month's flight.

"I think if there is a major crisis, people will literally stop spending money. That little bit of confidence that was coming back will be gone," said Martin, who employs 20 people in three cities.

"It is the last thing we need, we have done as we're told and we're still not really coming out of it. It would really just be a further nail in the coffin."

Martin is not the only one in Ireland watching developments in Greece and Spain with horror.

Ireland's government oversaw a return to mild economic growth last year but it is quickly learning that its own policies alone will not fix Ireland's debt pile, which will peak at 120 percent of GDP next year.

The country desperately needs two things: a stronger global economy so its exporters can begin selling more stuff, and a normalization of sovereign debt markets so Dublin can begin borrowing again and exit its international bailout on schedule next year.

Neither appear likely.

"VERY, VERY, VERY DIRE"

Irish borrowing costs have risen sharply recently as policymakers openly contemplate a Greek exit from the euro zone. Yields on Dublin's benchmark 2020 bond jumped by more than 60 basis points over two days in mid-May to hit a four-month high of 7.62 percent.

More worryingly, short-term borrowing costs showed signs recently that they could soon exceed those on longer-term bonds, a sign that investors are starting to price in the likelihood that Ireland will need further aid when its 67.5 billion euros of EU/IMF loans run out.

It is an abrupt end to a bond market run where yields more than halved over the course of nine months. That had been the reward for meeting every bailout target set, securing a cut in the cost of official funding and drawing private investment into the only bank not run by Ireland's government.

Mindful that yields on 10-year money stood above 14 percent at another moment of panic for the euro zone last July, Ireland's 15-month-old government is urging patience. For now.

"When we came into government, we were downgraded by all of the ratings agencies over a period of six months even when we felt we were getting a handle on things. It took quite a while for that to filter out and be recognized," European Affairs Minister Lucinda Creighton told Reuters.

"I think there's a likelihood that the same thing will happen in Spain and I think that the government have to be given breathing space to implement reforms and conduct the independent stress testing of its banks."

Ireland's banks have no direct exposure to Greece and exporters ship less than 0.5 percent of all goods there. Ireland's Finance minister Michael Noonan quipped earlier this month that the direct impact of a Greek exit from the euro could be limited to the availability of feta cheese on supermarket shelves.

But Creighton says a Greek exit would be "very, very, very dire."

Investors would likely cast around to consider what other countries could be forced to quit the currency and Ireland's risk premium would probably rocket.

Deposit holders who stayed put when Irish banks lost more than 100 billion euros of funding in late 2010 may think again and foreign companies considering following firms such as Pfizer and Google to set up in Ireland's business-friendly, low corporate tax economy, might reconsider any move.

Investment from such multinationals, whose employees account for almost 10 percent of Ireland's workforce, is a key plank of Ireland's business plans, helping to take the sting out of austerity measures by creating jobs - 13,000 in the next year, the government hopes - and keeping export activity buoyant.

The most immediate threat is next week's referendum on changes to Europe's fiscal treaty. A 'no' vote, like a Greek exit, would see big firms rethink investments, the head of the agency tasked with attracting them to the country said recently.

The chairman of Ireland's American Chamber of Commerce Peter O'Neill agrees.

"If we end up in that scenario, that's going to drive uncertainty and what that's going to mean is companies who are making investment decisions are maybe going to pause and ask, 'Am I making the right decision?'" said O'Neill, who employs over 3,000 workers as head of IBM's Irish operations.

GROWTH PROSPECTS DELAYED

What matters most, though, is economic growth. When you export more than 100 percent of your total production, instability abroad hurts.

The slowdown in Ireland's trading partners, which dragged the country back into recession in the last quarter of 2011, forced the government to revise down its forecasts at every turn over the past 12 months. Now GDP is set to grow at a modest 0.7 percent again this year.

That is still better than most euro zone countries and Ireland also has the distinction of being the only country in the monetary bloc showing growth in the amount of goods and services companies are purchasing.

But relative performance can only get you so far.

Irish exports to the euro zone were flat in the first quarter of 2012, figures that will likely worsen if there is prolonged turmoil in Greece or Spain.

Exporters like Willie Wixted are already planning for such a situation.

Wixted is the co-founder of ABC Nutritionals, which makes sports, diet and nutrition products and is the very definition of Ireland's economic model. Operating for just five years out of county Clare in the mid-west, his company already exports to 16 countries and has revenues growing at 50 percent a year.

With a big client in Greece and one in Spain too, ABC knows how exposed the Irish economy is to events elsewhere.

So Wixted spent part of the last month in Germany, teaming up with Irish trade officials there in a bid to enter its 17th market and offset potential problems in southern Europe.

"The Greek issue has been on the table for the last two years, and we've been diversifying our business - that's what we always do. You're always evaluating the environment and looking to see where the threat is," Wixted said at the plant in the town of Shannon where he employs 13 people.

For Wixted, a Greek exit would be painful but not fatal.

"It would be crippling but we'd continue to walk with a limp," he said.

Entrepreneurs to Lead the Way to a More Ethical Business Future ...

7 Graces Global ConferenceThe term ?Corporate Social Responsibility? (CSR) has been a buzz word in both the business and environmental worlds over the past few years. The message of those who speak out for CSR is simple: the time has come for businesses to move away from thinking only about short-term profits and look at the bigger impact their business has upon the global economy, people and the planet.

We live in a consumer culture. This means that, today more than ever, the entrepreneur has a powerful role to play in society. We all know that with great power comes great responsibility, and given all the ways business and marketing has affected the world, more and more entrepreneurs are waking up to the fact that it is time to reassess what we are doing and why, and to take responsibility for the impact our choices and actions have on the wider welfare of the world.

This cannot happen if we continue we all act in isolation. To create a tangible and positive shift in the world, we need to come together as business owners, and form a critical mass of key influencers in society. We need both to speak up and to listen to each other.

That is exactly what will be happening at the 7 Graces Global Conference (7GGC). The 3-day conference will take place on Friday June 22nd through Sunday 24th, 2012 in London, England and will also be broadcast worldwide via Interactive Live Stream.

7GGC will bring together entrepreneurs, marketers, media professionals, journalists, conscious consumers and eco-citizens from around the world, who wish to demonstrate their commitment to business ethics, corporate responsibility, social wellbeing and environmental sustainability. Together, they will become a Tipping Point for positive change. You can read about the conference, and book you place, at http://the7gracesofmarketing.com/7GGC.

The conference will also be offered via Interactive Live Stream, accessible from anywhere in the world with Internet access, where you can share your opinions, questions and innovations with London delegates.

The event will feature 9 dynamic guest presenters including Keynote speaker RACHEL ELNAUGH, former ?Dragon? from BBC TV?s hit show DRAGONS? DEN.

The 7 Graces Global Conference is the brainchild of my good friend, LYNN SERAFINN, a marketer and author of number-1 bestseller The 7 Graces of Marketing: how to heal humanity and the planet by changing the way we sell.

Lynn says, ?We won?t be ?selling? anything at this conference except our commitment to humanity and the planet. The primary question we?ll be addressing throughout the three days will be ?How can we heal humanity and the planet by changing the way we sell???

I am proud to be supporting 7GGC by helping spread the word about this important event, and I encourage you to attend either the London conference, or via Interactive Live Stream. And, as one of my valued readers, you can also get a special 10% discount when you register:

Lyle's Cancer In Remission - GeoffShackelford.com, With GolfDigest ...

Luke Elvy first tweeted it and now come several newspaper stories confirming the good news.

Peter Stone in the Sydney Morning Herald:

There is heartening news on Jarrod Lyle who, in early March, was diagnosed with recurrent myeloid leukaemia. He was able to be with his wife Briony for the birth of their first child on March 10 then began chemotherapy. Briony has told friends the cancer is in remission and he will receive a bone-marrow transplant next Friday. Lyle continues to get messages of support from his PGA Tour colleagues and many wear the ''Leuk the Duck'' badge on their caps. Rickie Fowler was wearing it when he won The Players Championship a fortnight ago.

Best Home Improvement And Home Renovation Tips

After you have finished the painting part of your home improvements, it is important to clean up properly. If you used latex paint, all you need to clean up is soap and water. If your surfaces were painted with alkyd paints, you will need paint thinner to clean the brushes and gear that you used to do the job. Remember to not pour paint thinner or excess paint down the drain since it can lead to ground-water pollution. Both paint thinner and excess paint needs to be disposed at a toxic waste collection facility.

To make your living room or bedroom appear larger than it actually is, try this trick from professional interior decorators: shift furniture away from walls. Not only does this create the illusion of extra square footage, it also lends a distinctively contemporary look and feel to even the most traditionally decorated rooms.

Communicate with your significant other. You should both be clear on what you want done and what the specific project is going to consist of. Rather than assigning tasks for each other, find out what they want to do and what they are good at. This will take pressure off of you during the project.

If you have limited floor space in a bedroom, consider lofting your bed. As long as your ceilings are high enough, lofting your bed can dramatically increase the amount of floor space in your room. Many furniture companies now stock double and even king and queen sized loft bed frames. So even if you share a bed with a partner, you can still loft it.

When doing home improvement projects around kitchens with gas stoves, gas fire places, or gas water heaters, it is very important to turn off the gas supply line. This will prevent any chances of injury or death caused by gas leaks, which can lead to suffocation or creating deadly gas explosions.

If you have wood or faux-wood paneling in your home, consider refinishing it rather than getting rid of it in a renovation. Removing the old paneling requires having it hauled away, while new wall covering must be brought in. Wood paneling can be easily sanded down and the voids filled in with drywall compound.

Coordinate your bedding and curtains. Purchasing matching fabrics for a room is a cheap way to give a bedroom a mini makeover. You can also choose fabrics that match your current flooring, rugs, pictures and wallpaper to make the room look even more stylish. If you are good at sewing, consider just buying the fabric and running up your own curtains and bed sheets.

When making improvements on your home to sell it to a potential buyer, you want to make a good first impression. In particular, you want to make sure you make the proper renovations on the exterior. If you want your home to sell, you need to make it look good.

Consider buying Marmoleum to make your home improvement project more Earth friendly. It?s made from linseed oil and natural pigments which are far safer for the environment. You can also choose other renewable resources like cork, bamboo, or eucalyptus, all of which come in easy to install forms.

Future of TransCanada?s Mainline could spur Canada?s next great energy debate

? May 25, 2012 ? 6:03 PM ET | Last Updated: May 25, 2012 9:13 PM ET

As if the great debates over proposed pipelines to export oil to the United States and Asia weren?t convulsing Canada enough, a new one is about to divide the country. It involves the future of TransCanada Corp.?s historic Mainline.

For more than half a century, the Mainline has been a reliable workhorse that over winter peaks moved as much as seven billion cubic feet a day (bcf/d) of natural gas from Western Canada ? roughly half of its total production today ? to warm up homes and energize factories in Eastern Canada.

But its use has fallen off sharply during the rest of the year because of the emergence of alternative supplies nearby, pushing pipeline tolls and tempers at both ends of the system through the roof. Indeed, tolls are so high they exceed the price of the natural gas it transports.

While recent oil sands pipeline debates have pitted the oil producing community against the environmental movement, the restructuring of the Mainline is rubbing many old wounds between the energy-producing West and the consuming East.

Indeed, when Canada?s energy regulator, the National Energy Board, kicks off four months of hearings on June 4 in Calgary that will include extended stops in Toronto and Montreal, many of the issues debated during the Mainline?s inception six decades ago will resurface.

Some of the same stakeholder groups will also re-appear ? Western Canadian producers, Eastern Canadian utilities and TransCanada itself ? all with the goal of getting stuck with as little as possible of the $6-billion pipeline?s untenable costs.

Then and now, at issue is whether it?s in the public interest to ship Western Canadian gas to Eastern markets despite high transportation costs as a way to ensure national energy security, when more economic north/south and other solutions are available.

The NEB?s three-member panel, headed by CEO and chairman Ga?tan Caron, will have to sort out how to make best use of the 14,101 kilometres of infrastructure, running from Alberta to Quebec, which it regulates. It will have to set new tolls, decide how to allocate risks and rewards among Mainline shippers and other stakeholders and decide whether the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin should be linked to Eastern markets.

While not officially part of the hearing, there is a new twist to the debate: TransCanada is floating a plan to give the Mainline a new lease on life by converting part of the system to oil service. The multi-billion plan would create a new domestic market for oil sands oil in Eastern Canada at a time other plans are bogged down by environmental opposition, provide respite from high tolls for natural gas shippers and get TransCanada out of a jam. But this, too, is already stoking debate about whether shipping Western oil eastward is the way to go, when larger world oil markets beckon.

The first time Canadians had a Mainline debate was in the 1950s. TransCanada?s predecessor, TransCanada Pipelines Ltd., had just been created with the goal of building a 3,200-kilometre natural gas pipeline linking Alberta to Quebec. The project played into the day?s federal Liberal government political imperative that Canada needed to meet its energy needs before Alberta gas could to flow to the U.S., oil patch historian Earle Gray writes in The Great Canadian Oil Patch.

Producers had strong doubts that shipping gas over such a long distance would be economically feasible or preferable to market-favoured solutions ? such as piping Alberta gas to closer southern markets and nearby U.S. gas to Eastern Canadian markets. But the project went ahead and the first gas from Alberta arrived in Toronto on Oct. 27, 1958.

Still, it left deep political wounds ? a warning to today?s political elites that Canadians take their pipelines very seriously.

A complex plan involving generous government support for the uneconomic line became such a flashpoint that it contributed to the fall of the Liberal government in 1957 after 22 years in power.

?Not since the founding of the Canadian Pacific Railway nearly a century before had Canada seen such a political maelstrom involving a private corporation,? Mr. Gray writes. ?It reached its climax in the most bitter, tumultuous political debate that has ever rocked the Parliament of Canada and left in its wake shattered careers and broken lives ? So impassioned were the feelings that some men fainted, others were left fatigued and in broken health, and one member of Parliament died of a heart attack.?

Much like in the ?50s, there are now cheaper options for Eastern Canadian consumers, particularly with the discovery of massive shale gas deposits in the Eastern U.S. such as the Marcellus. Ample supplies have depressed prices to the point they hardly justify the cost of long-haul transportation.

Meanwhile, Western producers are looking to Asia to sell their gas, where prices are higher and the market hungrier, and don?t see the point of continuing to pay for an asset that doesn?t fit into their strategies for the future.

After years of unsuccessful negotiations, TransCanada presented a restructuring proposal to the NEB in the fall it says achieves ?the greatest good for the greatest number? ? but that doesn?t seem to make anyone happy. It?s the reason the proposal has landed before the NEB for a ruling.

?You have competing interests ? producers on one side, utilities on the other and marketers in between, and there has been no real compromise by anybody,? said Cameron Gingrich, senior manager of gas services at the Calgary-based consultancy, Ziff Energy Group. ?It?s definitely going to be a contentious hearing.?

The cornerstone of the Calgary-based company?s restructuring proposal is to cut tolls on the Mainline and increase tolls on short-haul pipelines, primarily the massive Alberta-based Nova Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) system it also owns.

?For many years, our system has been a base-load, Empress (Alta.) to Eastern Canada/NortheasternU.S. system,? said TransCanada senior-vice president Karl Johannson, who will be one of the hearing?s top witnesses. ?Now it?s more short-hauls in Eastern Canada region and we have less volumes come out from Empress. And our tolls have to change to reflect that. Our shorter hauls have to take on a bigger burden of our overall cost of service.?

In general terms, TransCanada is proposing to increase tolls on the Alberta/NGTL system by 5? to 21? per thousand cubic feet (mcf), about 25%, and to reduce the toll on the Mainline to $1.39 per gigajoule (the two lines use different units), from $2.09, about 40%.

The new tolls would keep the Mainline afloat until volumes return, which TransCanada is confident will happen as natural gas prices eventually recover and the restructured Mainline makes Western Canadian natural gas more competitive.

Like producers, the pipeline company has no doubt that the days of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin supplying six bcf/d of gas to eastern markets are over.

?There are too many alternatives,? Mr. Johansson conceded. ?But there is still a lot of load on that line. There are still going to be daily flows. It?s still one of the biggest pipeline systems in North America.?

TransCanada believes that after benefitting from the system, producers have an obligation to sustain it since it was built for them.

The company also believes it?s in the interest of Western Canadian producers to maintain the option of shipping to Eastern Canadian markets. While new supplies are indeed available close by, the Mainline is providing essential fuel to Eastern Canada during cold winter months that cannot be easily replaced. The pipeline is less than half full on an average basis, but during the home-heating season it still runs close to capacity.

Western Canadian gas producers find many of TransCanada?s arguments outrageous and its restructuring proposal a way of transferring Western Canadian wealth to the East.

By increasing tolls on the Alberta system, all Western Canadian consumers will pay higher prices for natural gas, while Eastern Canadian consumers and short haul users benefit from lower Mainline tolls, they argue.

A subsidy to the Mainline of $350-million a year will make it hard for the already-struggling producers to stay in business.

Unlike the Mainline, the Alberta system is healthy and transports 10 bcf/d of gas across the West, picking up supplies from growing shale deposits, feeding growing oil sand operations and population centres, connecting to other pipelines headed for the U.S.

?The one thing that is very offensive to Western Canada is this idea they have that they will cause their subsidiary company, NGTL, to sign a big healthy contract with the Mainline and provide them with a whole lot of revenue for service that simply is not something that NGTL should be doing and is going be harmful to Western Canadian producers, and in fact harmful to everyone in Western Canada,? said Nikol Schultz, vice-president for pipeline regulation and general counsel at the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, which will represent producer interests at the hearings.

Producers, who supply little gas to the Mainline system today, are proposing to ?levelize? or reduce tolls over a period of four or five years until volumes recover. While they don?t believe that will happen, they are relying on TransCanada?s own rosy forecast. Alternatively, they propose leaving the tolls the way they are and to let market forces prevail.

Other options have also been talked about, including taking the system out of service, or securitizing it so that becomes a separate asset, perhaps supported by government financial backing.

The oil conversion option has been floated for many years, but it seems to be gaining momentum. Russ Girling, TransCanada?s CEO, talked about it at the company?s annual meeting in April.

?We are going to actively pursue it and see if we can turn it into an opportunity for both, the oil-and-gas industry and TransCanada,? Mr. Girling said to the media, suggesting the line could carry between 300,000 and 800,000 barrels a day to Eastern markets and that the conversion was being encouraged by refiners in Eastern Canada and oil producers in Western Canada.

Mr. Gingrich said that with uncertainties around the proposed Northern Gateway, TransMountain and Keystone XL oil sands pipelines there is a need for new outlets for oil sands oil.

Mr. Johansson said TransCanada is doing ?significant due diligence? on the plan and talking to potential shippers, but is not prepared to go into details because it?s not developed enough.

CAPP said it would press the company for information during the NEB hearings.

A portion of the line has already been converted to oil service in recent years and became part of the Keystone oil pipeline to the U.S.

The more ambitious plan to move of Western Canadian oil to Eastern Canada would also need to make market sense, Mr. Schultz said.

He noted that in the past, long-haul oil transportation was so costly it didn?t pay, and today Eastern Canada imports nearly 800,000 barrels a day from overseas.

The idea is expected to advance in parallel with the hearings, and potentially result in a separate application if there is shipper support.

Whether it?s in the business of shipping oil or gas, producers believes it?s time for TransCanada, as the owner of the Mainline, to start bearing the risk of its choices, rather than keep shifting it to others.

New Internet Business Sparked by Desire and A Book | Small ...

Business on the Internet

I recently had the opportunity to pose some questions to new business owner, Greg Fields. Here is an excerpt from his responses.

When asked to describe his business, Greg commented that, ?Fields of Treasures is an on-line Jewelry store that creates a great shopping experience which entices the customer to make a purchase; inspiring a good feeling, self-confidence, and the desire to return for more.?

Book sparks business

Greg stated that he had read the book, ?Get Rich Click? by Mark Ostrofsky. ?Mark owns 8 internet based companies with revenues of over $75 million annually. His book teaches SEO optimization, affiliate marketing, social network selling, etc. My wife and I have always wanted to open a business. She came up with fashion jewelry shortly before I read in the book that jewelry is one of the easiest items to convert customers from traditional retail to internet. I had always heard that the internet had great potential.? And the business was born.

Of course, many people have attempted to develop successful businesses on the internet and have failed. Greg is confident that with great products and a solid long term plan, he and his wife will be able to grow the business and then to expand to other items. ?Maybe home goods. We want to be the new Homesense or Kirklands.?

Ideal Customer Identified

Given the nature of the online business, Greg identifies his ideal customer as women between 30 to 55 who want to look great and feel good.

The Adventure of Owning a Business

In the business?s early stages, Greg already sees the benefits of being a business owner. ?I love the independence of the hours. (I work long hours but when I choose). I love the challenge of applying the lessons I have learned over many years to my own company.? And the downside? ?What?s not to like? I have freedom, vast earning potential and can run the company my way.?

Although his business is less than a few months old, Greg has already learned one important lesson. ?Always expect the unexpected. There are many hurdles to jump but their worth it.?

And his advice for others who are thinking about starting their own businesses is simple. ?Go for it. There will be many sleepless nights but the sense of accomplishment is worth it.?

Calcium Supplements a Heart Risk | Body Health & Fitness

Taking calcium supplements to build stronger bones may be bad for the heart, according to a new study that suggests getting similar doses from calcium-rich foods is a safer alternative.

The study, which followed nearly 24,000 German men and women between the ages of 35 and 64, found those who regularly took calcium supplements were 86 percent more likely to have a heart attack than those who did not. Study subjects who relied completely on supplements for their daily calcium intake were 139 percent more likely to have a heart attack.

?Calcium supplements, which might raise [heart attack] risk, should be taken with caution,? the authors wrote in their report, published Wednesday in the journal Heart.

Calcium is critical for strong bones and teeth. But the new study suggests supplements, many of which are sold as tasty gummy candies and chocolates, are no replacement for healthy foods.

?Calcium supplements have been widely embraced by doctors and the public on the grounds that they are a natural and therefore safe way of preventing osteoporotic fractures,? Ian Reid and Mark Bolland of the University of Auckland in New Zealand wrote in an editorial accompanying the study. ?It is now becoming clear that taking this micronutrient in one or two daily [doses] is not natural, in that it does not reproduce the same metabolic effects as calcium in food.?

Adult men and women should consume between 1,000 and 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily, according to the National Institutes of Health. For most Americans, that?s a cup of yogurt, a glass of milk and a slice of cheese. For nondairy dieters, a bowl of enriched cereal, a glass of fortified orange juice, half a cup of tofu and a slice of salmon will do the trick.

But some people, such as post-menopausal women, struggle to get enough calcium from food alone and turn to supplements for a boost. More than 60 percent of women over 60 take calcium supplements, up from 28 percent two decades ago according to a 2011 report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?s National Center for Health Statistics.

?We should return to seeing calcium as an important component of a balanced diet, and not as a low cost panacea to the universal problem of postmenopausal bone loss,? wrote Reid and Bolland, who in 2011 linked calcium supplements to an increased risk of heart attack in post-menopausal women.

Supplements have been the topic of growing scrutiny, with a 2011 study linking the nutrient-packed pills to an increased risk of early death in older women.

?The assumption should not be that they can?t hurt and might help,? Dr. Harlan Krumholz, associate professor of medicine at Yale University School of Medicine told ABC News. ?We should all want strong evidence of benefit and assurance of safety before making choices to take supplements.?

PFT: Bears' Marshall wants apology

GoodellSmithGettyGetty Images

The NFLPA?s claim that the league?s teams engaged in collusion during the 2010 uncapped year has ample merit.?? If it ever gets to the merits of the case.

That may not happen.? The new lawsuit filed Wednesday by the union in an effort to secure more than $3 billion from the league faces two major hurdles:? the union knew or should have known in 2011 that there was collusion in 2010, and the union thereafter ratified any collusion by agreeing to the cap penalties imposed on the Cowboys and Redskins as a result of their failure to abide by the alleged agreement to collude.

The petition filed with U.S. Judge David Doty alleges that the claims presented are ?entirely new,? but those claims flow from a set of facts that should have put the union on notice that something was amiss.? Apart from the collusion claim filed by the NFLPA in early 2011 regarding the lack of interest in restricted free agents during the uncapped year, there was ample evidence to support suspicion, or more, regarding the NFL?s plan to keep more money in the owners? coffers and put less in the players? pockets as a work stoppage was looming.

Prior to the launch of the uncapped year in early 2010, multiple teams cited internal budgets when addressing the reality that there would be no salary cap.? And to the extent that the actual spending by the 32 teams in 2010 suggested that perhaps the owners had an unwritten understanding as to the handling of the uncapped year, the NFLPA had full access to all contracts months before the new CBA was finalized, allowing the union?s lawyers to piece together enough circumstantial evidence to warrant full-blown litigation on the question of whether an informal salary cap had been established for the uncapped year.

Regardless of what the NFLPA knew or should have known before finalizing the current CBA and related legal documents, the paperwork seems to slam the door on any collusion claims relating to conduct in 2010.? As the CBA state at Article 3, Section 3(a) plainly states:? ?The NFLPA on behalf of itself, its members, and their respective heirs, executors, administrators, representatives, agents, successors and assigns, releases and covenants not to sue, or to support financially or administratively, or voluntarily provide testimony of any kind, including by declaration or affidavit in, any suit or proceeding (including any Special Master proceeding brought pursuant to the White SSA and/or the Prior Agreement) against the NFL or any NFL Club or any NFL Affiliate with respect to any antitrust or other claim asserted in White v. NFL or Brady v. NFL, including, without limitation . . . collusion with respect to any League Year prior to 2011.?? (Emphasis added.)

Even if the 2011 CBA didn?t slam the door on a collusion claim arising from the uncapped year of 2010, the amendment to the CBA that resulted in the league and the NFLPA agreeing to the imposition of cap penalties on the Redskins and Cowboys in exchange for an increase in the salary cap operates, in essence, as a ratification of the release of collusion claims.? Indeed, the NFLPA should have realized, the moment the NFL asked the union to agree to take $46 million in cap space from the Redskins and Cowboys for treating the term ?uncapped year? too literally, that the Redskins and Cowboys were being punished for refusing to collude.? By signing off on the cap penalties, the NFLPA reaffirmed its waiver of the collusion claims, since the mere request to strip cap space from the teams in question proved that collusion indeed occurred.

So why did the NFLPA go along with the cap penalties?? Because the NFL agreed to tinker with the salary cap formula in order to push the per-team limit higher in 2012 than it was in 2011.? If the salary cap had dropped during the first year of the new CBA, there?s a good chance that the contract of NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith wouldn?t have been renewed at annual meetings that began only a week or two after the new cap numbers were disclosed.

Thus, at first blush it appears that the NFLPA is trying to have it both ways.
