Is Microsoft making a gaming holodeck for your home?

6 hrs.

According to a patent filed by Microsoft, it looks like the video?games of the future could take over our entire living rooms ? holodeck style.

Microsoft has?filed a patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for "an interactive computing system configured to provide an immersive display experience." That immersive display experience means that the games you play?would be projected on all?four?walls of your living room.?

How would this work? For a sneak peek, see?the images above and below, which?Microsoft submitted to the patent office.

Microsoft summarizes what it's?working on like this:?"An immersive display environment is provided to a human user by projecting a peripheral image onto environmental surfaces around the user. The peripheral images serve as an extension to a primary image displayed on a primary display."

What that means is, while the player is focused on the primary display ? both the TV and the wall in front ??"they may be aware of an approaching video game enemy" from the?images displayed on the?surfaces around them, reads the patent. Meanwhile,?"the user may turn around and observe an enemy sneaking up from behind."

The lengthy?patent submission says the system would include: an?"interactive computing system" (i.e. a game console), an?"environmental display device" (for projecting the images on the walls around you), a "depth camera" and a "user tracking device" ? the?latter of which refers to the Kinect-looking gadget pictured in the top image.

Meanwhile, according to the patent submission, 3-D headgear may (or may not) also be used with the system.

How far off in the future we might see this new gaming experience isn't clear; nor is it clear whether this is a project Microsoft is working on in conjunction with?its next home game machine. But the patent filing has certianly?added fuel to the rumors already flying around that yet-to-be-revealed machine ? which has been dubbed the Xbox 720.?

One thing is for sure, Microsoft is very?interested in finding more immersive ways for you to experience your video?games. Earlier this year, documents were leaked that purported to show off Microsoft's new game?machine as well as the?next generation of Kinect ??a system that?would make use of?augmented reality glasses.

And Microsoft's not alone. The Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles?(see video below)?have been gaining a lot of buzz and a lot of support in the gaming community. Meanwhile,?these students are working on a holodeck project of their own.

After all, who doesn't want to live the holodeck dream??

Charlotte hires group to evaluate Democrats impact

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Tourism officials in Charlotte, N.C. have hired an outside group to measure the economic impact of the Democratic National Convention.

The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority usually makes visitor spending projections for large events. But those estimates have been questioned, so officials have hired Tourism Economics of Pennsylvania to conduct the study.

"We chose this route to ensure we provide the most comprehensive, credible and clear data," CRVA spokeswoman Kimberly Meesters said.

The authority initially estimated the convention could generate $75 million in visitor spending.

Last week's convention attracted as many as 35,000 people to Charlotte, including 15,000 journalists and 6,000 delegates.

Some economists point out that political conventions are so big, they crowd out normal business. During the DNC, thousands of uptown workers stayed home or worked at different locations. Some stores and restaurants were closed.

It was not immediately clear if the new study will include the impact of business lost as well as the spending in the area.

It's also was unclear how much the study will cost. It's expected to take about two months to complete.

The study was commissioned by the authority, as well as Charlotte Center City Partners, Charlotte Regional Partnership and the Charlotte Chamber.

Belly Dancers Are Beautiful

Belly Dancers Are Beautiful

Belly dancers are beautiful and exotic with some degree of extremity to their costumes. An Egyptian belly dancer will elaborately deck out in the baladi as well as layers of dangling jewelry. It is often umed that the exaggerated beads and palates along with the jewelry is for seduction, in particular the seduction of men, but actually these customs originate in the middle east among women to help one another with the birthing process, both as a supportive ritual and as a conditioning exercise, not as a troop of Egyptian bellydancing lesbians or as a harem of adulteress ladies. dvdfitness.net http://www.dvdfitness.net

Amobee Launches Its 3D Mobile Ad Builder PULSE Create

20120910_amobee_pulse_createAmobee, the mobile ad serving company recently acquired by Asian carrier SingTel, is launching a new ad building product called PULSE Create. Amobee CEO Trevor Healy says the PULSE Create technology comes from the acquisition of AdJitsu. I remember being impressed by the quality and immersiveness of the AdJitsu ads back when the platform was being developed by Cooliris, and with PULSE Create, advertisers should be able to create those impressive 3D ads in a dramatically reduced time frame. Healy says a 3D mobile ad would normally take four or five weeks to develop, but with PULSE Create it should only be four or five days.

How the nation and world commemorated 9/11

A look at some commemorations on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks:

? NORFOLK, Va. ? Sailors and Marines aboard a warship forged with 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center held a remembrance ceremony and pledged to do all in their power to prevent another attack. "We often tell people, it's not just about that one day. The spirit here is really about what happened the next day and the next day and every day since," Capt. John Kreitz, the USS New York's commanding officer, said in a telephone interview after the shipboard ceremony. "That spirit pervades this ship." The New York's home port is Norfolk, Va., but it is operating in the Navy's 5th Fleet area of responsibility, which includes the Arabian Sea, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean.

? JERUSALEM ? At Israel's Sept. 11 memorial ? a 30-foot bronze sculpture of a waving American flag that morphs into a memorial flame ? the father of one victim endorsed the crackdown on terrorism. Dov Shefi, the father of Hagay Shefi, who was attending a conference that day in the twin towers, said, "Let us hope that the free world will continue to fight against leaders of terrorist organizations and their supporters; let all the souls of the thousands of victims whose names are marked on this great living memorial in Jerusalem be remembered from here to eternity."

? WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama visited service members' graves at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington. The Obamas quietly walked between rows of graves at Section 60, which contains the remains of the most recent war dead. Pausing at several graves, Obama placed presidential "challenge" coins at the base of the headstones. The first headstone listed the names of 10 victims of an Oct. 26, 2009, helicopter crash in Afghanistan. Earlier, the Obamas placed a wreath at the Pentagon and observed a moment of silence on the White House South Lawn.

? SHANKSVILLE, Pa. ? Scores of people began arriving shortly after dawn at the site where a United Airlines jet crashed in southwestern Pennsylvania after the crew and passengers revolted against their hijackers. "Every 9/11 I come out to one of the sites," said Robert Hamel of El Segundo, Calif. Hamel spent the 10th anniversary at the ground zero ceremony in New York City last year, and plans to visit the Pentagon for next year's anniversary. Hamel says he feels a need to be connected to the tragic events of the day.

? GLEN ROCK, N.J. ? For some communities in the New York City region, 2012 was the first year without an official Sept. 11 memorial observance. The northern New Jersey community of Glen Rock held no organized public commemoration. The Glen Rock Assistance Council and Endowment, a community group set up to help families of the town's 11 victims, decided after months of community meetings that it was time to end the public events and let people remember on their own. "It was a difficult decision," said Brad Jordan, the group's chairman. "We felt this year it was more appropriate for a more personal and private observance."

? MONTCLAIR, N.J.? The mayor of Montclair decided to shift from a ceremony commemorating the terrorist attacks to urging residents to commit "random acts of kindness." Spokeswoman Katya Wowk said, "It was a matter of moving in another direction, really, in terms of looking at marking the day in a way that would be meaningful and significant to everyone in terms of a service-oriented commemoration."

? NEW YORK ? About a block from the trade center site and the annual ceremony there, employees of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were remembered at the Church of St. Peter. Judith McNeil of East Orange, N.J., wore a T-shirt with a picture of her brother, Walter, who was looking ahead to retiring from the Port Authority police department when he was killed on Sept. 11. She was unconcerned that public interest in the commemorations may have declined. "To be honest, it's better because there aren't so many people and reporters in our face, in our space," she said. "It's all about the families, and we need to show we're here for each other. I will keep coming here as long as God gives me good health and I'm still breathing."

? HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. ? Family members and friends of Sept. 11 victims gathered for an oceanfront ceremony at Point Lookout Beach in Hempstead. They wrote messages and names of victims on a panorama of the New York City skyline. Some also included the names of servicemen and women serving overseas.

? BOSTON ? A man who raced into a burning apartment building to alert residents was honored as part of observances in Massachusetts. Paul Antonino, of Wakefield, was presented with the annual Madeline Amy Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery. The award was created to honor Sweeney, a flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 11, the first of two jetliners that were hijacked from Boston's Logan Airport and flown into the World Trade Center. Also in Boston, the names of the more than 200 people with direct ties to Massachusetts who died were read by Gov. Deval Patrick, Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray and family members. A wreath was placed at the state's 9/11 memorial in the Boston Public Garden.

? MOOSE, Wyo. ? A group of disabled veterans climbed to the summit of the 13,770-foot Grand peak in Grand Teton National Park on Tuesday. The climb was made to commemorate the Sept. 11 attacks and help in their healing process. The climbing party consisted of about a dozen people, including three disabled combat vets. Guide Mike Kirby says the climb symbolizes moving beyond Sept. 11 and the resulting war against terrorists.

? DENVER ? Colorado government leaders marked Sept. 11 with a service that also honored the victims of the Aurora theater shooting and wildfires this summer that destroyed hundreds of homes. Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan called first responders "our heroes" and said he wanted to deliver a message from his constituents. "Senseless acts of violence do not define us as a community," Hogan told a crowd of hundreds at a park across the street from the state Capitol. "Instead it is the lives and acts of heroes and the overwhelming acts of kindness and care for our neighbors that best defines Aurora, and the same can be said of our entire state."

? RENO, Nev. ? Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said Sept. 11 is a day to renew a resolve to protect the nation from "evil" attacks and thanked members of the National Guard for their service and sacrifices. Speaking to 4,000 members at the National Guard Association convention, Romney said the National Guard in its long history has "never faltered, never wavered," whether called up to help residents at home recover from natural disasters or to fight an enemy in distant lands.

Protecting genes, one molecule at a time

Monday, September 10, 2012

An international team of scientists have shown at an unprecedented level of detail how cells prioritise the repair of genes containing potentially dangerous damage. The research, published in the journal Nature and involving academics from the University of Bristol, the Institut Jacques-Monod in France and Rockefeller University in the US, studied the action of individual molecules in order to understand how cellular repair pathways are triggered.

The genetic information that forms the "instruction booklet" for cells is encoded in the molecular building blocks of DNA, and can be damaged by mutagens such as ultraviolet light or tobacco smoke, as well as by normal "wear and tear" as the cells age. If left unrepaired, such damage can kill the cells or cause them to change their behaviour and perhaps cause disease.

Cells protect themselves by producing proteins that detect the damaged building blocks, cut them out and replace them with a patch of new DNA. Most cells, including bacteria and humans, contain mechanisms that ensure that the genes that are currently in use are repaired most quickly.

The team, led by Dr Terence Strick of the Institut Jacques Monod, Paris, used single molecules of DNA stretched in a magnetic field to watch individual proteins work on an active, damaged gene. They found that more steps are needed to repair the damage than previously thought, and that the length of time that the proteins reading the gene hesitate when they reach the damage is likely to be critical for a successful handover to the proteins that repair the gene.

Dr Nigel Savery from the University's School of Biochemistry, who led the Bristol-based part of the project, said: "Finding out how different parts of the genome are repaired at different rates is critical to understanding processes as diverse as generation of antibiotic resistance in bacteria and the patterns of mutations that give rise to cancer. Studying these processes at the level of single molecules has allowed us to detect important steps that are hidden when large numbers of molecules are studied together."

Ants have exceptionally 'hi-def' sense of smell

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? Ants have four to five times more odor receptors than most other insects, a team of researchers have discovered.

The research team, led by Lawrence Zwiebel at Vanderbilt, recently completed the first first full map of olfactory system that provides ants with their sense of taste and smell. They found the industrious insects have genes that make about 400 distinct odorant receptors, special proteins that detect different odors. By comparison, silk moths have 52, fruit flies have 61, mosquitoes range from 74 to 158 and the honeybee has 174.

"The most exciting moment for me was when the analysis came back showing that we had identified more than 400 OR genes, the largest number of any known insect species," said Xiaofan Zhou, the research associate who headed up the characterization process. "It meant that we had successfully taken the first step toward gaining a new level of understanding of the complex social system that has made ants one of the most successful families on the planet."

People have long been intrigued and inspired by ants' ability to form highly organized colonies with division of labor, communication between individuals and ability to solve complex problems. For some time, scientists have also known that chemical communication plays an important role in ant behavior. "So it's a reasonable supposition that this dramatic expansion in odor-sensing capability is what allowed ants to develop such a high level of social organization," said Laurence Zwiebel, professor of biological sciences, who directed the new study that was published in the Aug. 30 issue of the journal PLoS Genetics.

Zwiebel's team characterized the olfactory systems of two distinctly different ant species as part of an interdisciplinary project titled "Epigenetics of Behavior, Longevity and Social Organization in Ants," headed by Danny Reinberg of New York University and funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In 2010, the project sequenced the genomes of the two species -- the Florida carpenter ant (Camponotus floridanus) and the Indian jumping ant (Harpegnathos saltator) -- for the first time. This effort set the stage to make the detailed olfactory study possible.

The olfactory system of most insects is centered in their antennae and is broadly made up of three different classes of receptors: odorant receptors (ORs), that identify different aromatic compounds and pheromones; gustatory receptors (GRs), that distinguish between different tastes and react to some pheromones; and newly discovered ionotropic glutamate receptors (IRs), that are narrowly tuned to various poisonous and toxic compounds. The study found that the primary expansion in the ant's olfactory system is focused on ORs. The number of GRs and IRs are comparable to those found in other insects.

The initial automated analysis of the two ant genomes found only about 100 genes for ORs and ten GRs. "We knew these numbers were low because olfactory receptors are very difficult to identify," Zhou said. So he and his colleagues designed a novel automated bioinformatic process for this purpose, combined with extensive manual evaluation.

The researchers also compared both the identity and expression levels of ORs in the two species and found significant differences. This wasn't surprising because the two species were selected to reflect the high level of diversity that exists within the ant family. Carpenter ants live in large colonies with long-lived queens that produce all the fertilized eggs. There are two castes of sterile workers. When the queen dies so does the colony. Jumping ants, by contrast, live in small groups, the difference between the queen and workers islimited, and some workers can mate and lay fertilized eggs. "The differences in receptors are most probably associated with the difference in lifestyles of the two species," Zhou said.

Similarly, their analysis found important differences in the ORs in the antennae of males and females. Overall, they found that the males have only one third the number of ORs that the females express. "The primary role of males is fertilization of eggs, so we assume that the ORs that males express and that females don't are probably tuned to pheromones produced by the queen," Zhou said.

The team also took the initial steps in identifying the chemical signals that set off specific ORs. Research Associate Jesse Slone adapted an assay that the group initially developed for matching ORs with chemical signals in the malaria mosquito. The assay involves inserting the gene for a receptor into frog eggs so that the receptors are expressed on the egg's surface. By wiring the eggs and then exposing them to different chemical compounds, the eggs produce a measurable electric signal when the receptor is activated.

Slone used this assay to identify the compounds that trigger one OR on each of the ant species. He found that an aromatic compound found in anise triggered the OR from the jumping ant that he tested. The receptors were found in both males and workers. Since studies have shown that anise oil has a repellant and/or insecticidal effect on some species of insects, the compound may be a general insect repellent that this OR is designed to detect, Slone speculates.

By comparison, the OR from the carpenter ant turned out to react to a naturally occurring odorant found in cooked beef and pork. The scientists have no idea why this compound is relevant to the ants, but they did establish that the specific receptor is enhanced in workers, relative to males.

"This is just the beginning. But we have demonstrated that we have the basic tools we need to act as 'OR detectives' to map the ants 'odor space' and identify the chemical signals that trigger specific behaviors in the ant's extensive repertoire," Slone said.

This represents the opening of a major new research avenue for the Zwiebel Lab, which has been focused on pioneering work deconstructing the olfactory system of the malaria mosquito. "When I was in graduate school, a group of us dreamed about deciphering the role that genes might play in ant social behavior. So I couldn't pass up this opportunity when it came along. It's taken 30 years but we've finally gotten to the point where we can actually do these studies."

Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Antonis Rokis, Professor Shelley Berger at the University of Pennsylvania, Assistant Professor J?rgen Liebig at Arizona State University, Assistant ProfessorAnandasankar Ray at the University of California, Riverside and Professor Danny Reinberg at New York University also contributed to the study, which was funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Margaret Paul, Ph.D.: Running From Love

Do you want to find the love of your life but find yourself sabotaging relationship after relationship? Are you running from love? Do you know what the fear is that you are running from?

I hear over and over from people who email me: "I'm in a relationship with a wonderful man (or woman) and I'm pushing him (or her) away. I don't know why I'm sabotaging this relationship."

  • Do you find yourself finding little faults with the other person right after you decide you really like him or her?
  • Do you find that you are suddenly not as attracted to the other person?
  • Do you find yourself not speaking your truth to the other person but instead editing what you say and then feeling tense?
  • Are you feeling somewhat bored in the relationship, even though you've told your friends that you've found the perfect partner?
  • Are you getting preoccupied or finding other ways to distance yourself from the relationship?
  • Are you not returning phone calls, emails or texts to him or her?
  • Are you suddenly too busy to get together?
  • Are you wondering if, once again, you've picked the wrong person?

What's Really Going On Here?

What's likely going on is that you have a fear of losing yourself in the relationship. And the more you like the person, the bigger your fear of engulfment and commitment gets.

Why?

There are a number of reasons you might fear losing yourself in a relationship:

  • You've been taught that you are responsible for another's feelings, especially someone you love. You believe that if your partner is unhappy, it's up to you to fix it, even if it means giving yourself up.
  • You believe that taking loving care of yourself, with no intent to harm another, is selfish -- that being a caring person means you are willing to put yourself aside to do what another expects you to do, even if it's not what you want or need to do.
  • You have a deep fear of rejection, and you believe you have to give yourself up in order to avoid being rejected. You believe that no one will love you if you stay true to yourself. You are trying to control how the other person feels about you by giving yourself up to avoid rejection.

What all these fears come down to is a deep false belief that you have to give yourself up to be loved and to be seen as a caring person. Giving yourself up -- giving up your freedom to be yourself and do what brings you joy -- is a terrifying prospect. As long as you have these false beliefs -- and they might be unconscious -- you will likely find yourself running from love.

You will stop running from love when you are wiling to let go of trying to control how the other person feels about you by giving yourself up and instead risk being fully yourself. You can do this ONLY when you stop rejecting yourself.

How Are You Rejecting Yourself?

  • Do you tell yourself that the other person's feelings are more important than yours and that you have to put yourself aside for the other person? This is a rejection of self.
  • Do you judge yourself if the other person is unhappy with you? This is a rejection of self.
  • Do you make how the other person feels about you responsible for whether you feel you are okay? This is a rejection of self.
  • Do you ignore your own feelings and needs, instead making the other's feelings and needs important? This is a rejection of self.
  • Do you allow yourself to take another's rejection personally, telling yourself that you are inadequate if someone else rejects you? This is a rejection of self.

As long as you are rejecting yourself rather than loving and valuing yourself, you will feel afraid of losing yourself in a relationship. You might want to do the inner work necessary to learn how to love and value yourself enough so that you are no longer running from love.

(AP) ? A Louisville man accused of opening fire at a homeowners association meeting, killing one and critically wounding another, was ordered held on a $1 million bond Saturday at an initial court hearing where a prosecutor called him "the epitome of danger to the community."

A not guilty plea was entered on behalf of 55-year-old Mahmoud Yousef Hindi to charges of murder, assault and wanton endangerment in the Thursday evening shooting at a church.

Dressed in a blue jail outfit, Hindi showed no emotion and did not speak as he stood before a judge.

Afterward, defense attorney Todd Lewis called the case a "horrendous tragedy" and said the Hindi family's thoughts were with the victims' families. Lewis asked for patience in unraveling the case.

"We look forward to our day in court," he told reporters. "There's always another side to things."

What specifically sparked the attack wasn't clear.

Police say Hindi, a doctor educated in Jordan, had a history of disputes with the homeowners group revolving around a fence that the association said didn't meet its height or design requirements in the upscale neighborhood of Spring Creek.

The association's attorney says the organization brought the zoning violation charges to the city. Hindi wrote several letters to the attorney, expressing anger and contempt for the attorney.

In one letter that ranted about several neighbors, Hindi cited the Quran, the theory of creationism, the idea that America has gone to Communism, threatens to form his own homeowners association and accused neighbors of stealing his "no trespassing signs" in the dispute over the fence.

"You would not believe some of the crap he wrote in these letters," said Mark Wagner, a former president of the homeowners association. "It was rambling stuff."

Wagner, who used to live near Hindi, said his predecessor as association president resigned from the post and abruptly moved from the neighborhood after having property-line disputes with Hindi.

"They were so scared of him that they moved," Wagner said in a phone interview. "They dumped their house. They sold it to the first person who looked at their house ... to get away from this guy."

Police say Hindi was at the homeowners meeting for a short time before he started shooting. Some of the several people in attendance detained him until police arrived. Police did not immediately release other details such as what sort of weapon was used.

Slain was 73-year-old David Merritt, a one-time association president, who was shot once in the head and died at the scene, according to a deputy coroner.

The wounded man, whose name was not immediately released, was in critical condition Saturday at University of Louisville Hospital.

Barbara Pass, who lives down the street from Hindi, said people were intimidated by him.

"He threatened people, he would say things like, 'You know I've got a gun and I just might use it.'"

Two of Hindi's brothers and one of his sons watched the brief arraignment via closed-circuit television in another room. They declined comment as they left the local jail where the hearing was held.

"The family is in a state of shock and disbelief as to what has happened," said Khalid Kahloon, another attorney representing Hindi. "This is a ... peace-loving, law-abiding family enjoying their American dream, and then it's shattered by this unfortunate and very tragic incident."

His attorneys asked the judge for a much lower bond. Kahloon called him a "complex man" who "is not a danger to the community in the sense that this crime is not a random, violent crime."

Kahloon cited another neighbor's favorable comments about Hindi. The neighbor, Marty Swiergosz, told The Courier-Journal that he got along well with Hindi and Hindi's family.

"It's real complex because they were nothing but good to me," Swiergosz said of the Hindi family. "They'd give us stuff out of their garden. He always wanted to feed our dogs. That was 98 percent of the time."

Swiergosz described Hindi as a "passionate man," but told the Louisville newspaper that he wouldn't repeat some things Hindi had said.

Prosecutor Joe Martz objected to lowering the bond.

"He is the epitome of danger to the community," Martz said at the arraignment.

The judge kept the bond at $1 million and set a pre-trial hearing for Sept. 14.

Hindi is a Jordanian-American citizen who worked in nuclear medicine, Kahloon said.

Hindi was unable to keep practicing medicine because of health problems ? he recently had back surgery ? and his medical license had expired, the attorney said.

Kahloon mentioned one other time when Hindi had a brush with the law, when he was given a traffic ticket in another county for exceeding the speed limit by 7 mph. Hindi had failed to appear for a hearing on the citation, resulting in a bench warrant, the attorney said.

Motorola Defy XT (U.S. Cellular)

Are you a U.S. Cellular subscriber that lives on the beach? If so, the Motorola Defy XT might be just the?phone?for you. If not, you may want to keep looking. The $79.99 Defy XT?is a dustproof and water-resistant Android smartphone, which makes it a good companion for the sand and surf. But it's running an old version of Android, doesn't have 4G, has an unpleasant paneling effect on the display, and is a mediocre media player, which makes it just average almost everywhere else.

Design, Call Quality, and Network
The Motorola Defy XT?is pleasantly small and pocketable compared to mammoth new smartphones like the Motorola Electrify 2 and Samsung Galaxy S III. At 4.5 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and just 4.06 ounces, it's lightweight and comfortable to hold. It's a fairly generic black slab with a rubberized back panel, rubber plugs to shield the headphone jack and power port, and a locking mechanism on the back panel to keep everything in check. It feels sturdy.

The Defy XT's display features 854-by-480-pixel resolution. Given the relatively tiny 3.7-inch screen, it makes for a sharp 265-pixel-per-inch density. At a glance, it looks great. But look closer and you'll see a strange vertical paneling effect across the Defy XT's display?it's the phone's touch sensor, which you shouldn't be able to see. There are seven visible seams running down the screen. They aren't terribly noticeable at first, but once you lock in that's all you can see. There are four capacitive function keys beneath the display, and typing feels fine on the phone's onscreen keyboard.

The phone is water-resistant and dustproof, and the screen is scratch-resistant, which makes it much more durable than the average smartphone. Keep in mind this isn't a rugged phone, though, so if you drop it on the floor, you're out of luck. But water is a different story. With its rubber ports latched, the Defy XT survived a number of dunks into a container of water. You can't use it in the water, but it was totally fine after being taken out and dried. It also held up fine in a container of sand, and when I took a key to its display, it didn't scratch. So if you spend a lot of time roughing it outdoors, this phone may work for you.

The Defy XT is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. Call quality is average. Voices sound a little fuzzy in the earpiece, and maximum volume is still somewhat low. The speakerphone sound fine but isn't loud enough to hear outdoors. And calls made with the phone sound a little muffled, though background noise cancellation is pretty good.

Calls sounded fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset??and Motorola's voice dialing app worked well over Bluetooth. Battery life was disappointing at just 4 hours and 40 minutes of talk time.

There's no 4G LTE support on the Defy XT. While U.S. Cellular's LTE network is still in its infancy, and we haven't yet had a chance to test it, we expect it to offer much faster speeds than 3G. So if you want to make sure your phone is future-proof, you should look for a handset that supports LTE, like the Galaxy S III.

Processor, Android, and Apps
The Defy XT is powered by a single-core 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 MSM7227A processor, which is pretty dated at this point. It's still better than what you'll find in other budget phones on U.S. Cellular, like the Huawei Ascend II, but it isn't good for gaming, and you'll encounter some all-around sluggishness.

Unfortunately, the phone is still running Android 2.3.7 (Gingerbread), which is rather long in the tooth nowadays. There's no word on an update to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) or even Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). For the most part, though, if you're buying a new phone, you should make sure it runs at least Android 4.0, because it comes with a host of major improvements over past versions like the one we see here.

As it stands, you're getting an old version of Android that's been moderately customized by Motorola. There are seven customizable home screens to swipe between, which come preloaded with some apps and widgets from Motorola. There's also a fair share of bloatware, but luckily most of it can be deleted. You should be able to run most of the 500,000+ apps in the Google Play store, though not all of them may run smoothly.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
There's a microSD card slot underneath the phone's back cover, which is covered by an additional rubber toggle. Motorola includes a 2GB card, and my 32GB and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine as well. There's also 263MB of free internal storage.

The Defy XT was able to play all of our music test files except for FLAC. Music sounded good through?Altec Lansing Backbeat?Bluetooth headphones as well as wired earphones, but there's an audible hiss whenever something isn't playing. The phone was able to play back all of our video files except for DivX, but only at resolutions up to 800-by-480.

The 5-megapixel auto-focus camera has an LED flash. Shutter delay is rather long, at 1.3 seconds to take a shot. Pictures show average detail for a 5MP sensor, but colors look a little washed out. The camera also records 800-by-480 video at 30 frames per second indoors and out. It plays back smoothly, but that resolution is pretty low. There's also a VGA front-facing camera for video chat.

If you're always outside, add a star to the Defy XT's rating. If you're not, you may want to consider a different phone. The HTC One V shares a similar size and price tag with the Defy XT, but you get a better display and a new version of Android (4.0). If you want 4G, the Galaxy S III supports U.S. Cellular's 4G LTE network, has a much faster dual-core processor, more internal storage, a better camera, and a massive 4.8-inch display, though it's a lot more expensive. The Samsung Galaxy S II and Motorola Electrify 2 are also much more powerful than the Defy XT, though neither supports 4G.

St. John's Military School in Salina seeks dismissal of lawsuit

? A Kansas military school is again asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit by families of 11 former cadets alleging physical abuse.

Lawyers for St. John's Military School in Salina filed a motion Wednesday seeking dismissal of the lawsuit or an order putting the dispute into arbitration.

The move is largely procedural since U.S. District Judge John Lungstrum denied a similar motion in June. The school says it renewed the request because four new cadets have since been added to the case and it wanted to preserve all legal issues for a potential appeal.

St. John's has denied allegations that higher-ranking students were encouraged to discipline younger cadets, leading to abuse.

Quakes in southwest China kill dozens, damage 20,000 homes

BEIJING (Reuters) - Two shallow 5.6 magnitude earthquakes hit mountainous southwestern China on Friday, killing at least 64 people and forcing tens of thousands of people from damaged buildings, state media said.

The quakes struck near the border of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, the first one at 11:19 a.m. (0319 GMT) and the second one about 45 minutes later, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

About 700 people were injured and 20,000 homes damaged in the remote mountainous region about 350 km (210 miles) from the Yunnan provincial capital Kunming, the official Xinhua news agency said.

As the number of dead climbed throughout the day, state media reported that Premier Wen Jiabao would travel to the area, as he has often done when disasters strike Chinese regions.

President Hu Jintao called for disaster relief to be dispatched to the area while attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in the Russian city of Vladivostok.

Most of the victims were from Yiliang county in Yunnan, near the epicenter of the quakes, which struck at a depth of about 9 km (5.6 miles) according to the USGS.

By mid-afternoon, authorities had moved more than 100,000 from the area as a series of more than 60 aftershocks struck. No deaths were reported in Guizhou province.

Calls to police stations and hospitals in Yiliang went unanswered, but a worker at No. 2 Renmin Hospital in Zhaotong city said medical staff were busy treating the injured.

"We have admitted injured people, but don't have an overall number yet, and we can't comment without government approval," he told Reuters, declining to give his name.

Buildings in China's less developed regions are often thrown up with little regard for construction standards, making them susceptible to earthquakes.

Footage from state broadcaster CCTV showed boulder-covered roadways, abandoned cars and black smoke pouring from buildings.

"The hardest part of the rescue now is traffic. Roads are blocked and rescuers have to climb the mountains to reach hard-hit villages," Xinhua quoted Li Fuchun, an official from Luozehe, the town at the epicenter of the quake, as saying.

The death toll may rise as rescuers reach villages cut off by landslides, the news agency said.

STRUCTURES PRONE TO COLLAPSE

Many structures in the area are built with mud and timber, making them more prone to collapse, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said.

"On the other hand, extricating people trapped in these structures may be easier than from under concrete/brick homes, meaning that there could be many more injuries proportionate to the number of deaths," it said.

In 2008, about 87,600 people were killed in the southwestern province of Sichuan when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit. Many of the victims died in the rubble of homes and schools built without adequate steel reinforcement.

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake in April 2010 killed nearly 3,000 people in a remote part of western Qinghai province, devastating much of Yushu county, where many displaced by the disaster still live in tents.

Quakes with an epicenter less than 70 km below the surface are considered shallow and can cause significant damage, even at lower magnitudes.

Christchurch, the largest city in New Zealand's South Island, is still recovering from a 5-km-deep quake measuring 6.3 which killed 182 people in February 2011.
